German to English translations [PRO] Marketing - Agriculture
German term or phrase:Frischelogistik
Hi everyone,
I am translating a report for an agricultural company where they talk about what they have been doing to improve quality along the entire production chain. This is when the above term comes up in the following sentence:
Die *Frischelogistik* wird ständig verbessert.
The term "freshness logistics" comes up a number of times on the Internet but always seems to be a German translation.
I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance!
Nice to see you here, too. The logistics process - frequently misunderstood (and misused) as another word for transport - combines all steps of the supply chain from producer-site warehousing, picking, consigning, despatching, transport , intermediate storage , further transportation and delivery.
In a cool or cold chain system, this all guarantees maintained product freshness - as long as the chain remains unbroken.

Yes, whether produce or perishables, the issue is HOW the freshness is preserved and not WHAT is kept fresh.
Which brings me to 'freshness preservation (methods)'
If it's an agricultural company, they may tend to talk about fresh produce rather than fresh food. They tend to make a difference between the two to distinguish between processed and unprocessed products. A lettuce or a cabbage, milk or eggs would, for example, be fresh produce.

Yes, that's it in a (fresh) nutshell! Good luck and happy translating.
The context in which this term appears is basically a list of other things that have been improved (including partnerships with growers etc.). I don't think a detailed description is necessary. Fresh food logistics and perishable logistics are both good ideas, but I also feel that they somehow lack the notion of "maintaining freshness", which "freshness logistics" does contain. It seems like this concept has not really come up in the English-speaking world. In the end, I guess, it will have to come down to deciding between a clunkier term that gets the message across or a more idiomatic term that loses somewhat of the idea.

Logistics,

originally a military term, has little to do with the condition of the goods transported, which is the essence of this odd term. I would do away with 'logistics' altogether and replace it with something more appropriate to the measures/steps/methods of maintaining freshness. It seems as if the author wishes to use pseudo-industrial terms, so we must some how retain this tone.

since you live in the home country of Transfesa, how does "Perishable(s) logistics sound"? Yes, I am aware they specialise in automotive logistics today, but in the third quarter of the 20th century, this was one of their principal activities. And they moved millions of tons of perishable food notably from Spain, Italy and the south of France throughout Europe and between mainland Europe and the UK on train ferries.

This is the process/logistics of keeping fresh foods fresh from harvest to shelf, so it has this added element of the freshness being maintained, not just the logistics of raising. harvesting and transporting the food. "Freshness logistics" avoids a lengthy description such as ' the steps taken to keep/process of keeping fresh foods fresh.' More context would reveal just how detailed a description is necessary. Perhaps it is already provided in the text?.
