German term or phrase: geschlossen
"Südtirol gilt als das größte geschlossene Obstanbaugebiet der Welt und als ein bedeutendes Weinanbaugebiet."

I'm not really sure what's meant by "geschlossen" here. My best guesses get either no hits or only hits on German Web sites. TIA for your help.

continuous
Explanation:
Another suggestion. I think the idea is that the fruit-growing region/area is continuous, uninterrupted, unbroken, etc.

At the time, the region was home to the largest continuous area of fruit orchards in the world, 60 square miles of six thousand small, independent farms, mostly family owned.

The Fruit region of the Altes land is the largest continuous area of fruit production in all of Europe, though it is split up into thousands of small farms.

The region is the biggest continuous fruit orchard in Central Europe and the world's northernmost orchard region of such size. It extends over 143 km². 77% of the trees are apples, 12.7% are cherries.

Good references plus Bernhard's peer grade and subsequent discussion comments have convinced me for this one. Thanks Alison and special thanks to Bernhard for all his helpful comments. He deserves points too! But thanks also to everyone else who offered an idea - there were a good number of plausible suggestions. So appreciate everyone's help.

self-contained

Explanation:
"self-contained fruit-growing region" would be my suggestion, though I have to admit that the only two ghits for this are both for German websites!

"Take a HADAG steamer to the Altes Land, Germany's biggest self-contained fruit-growing region.

http://www.hadag.de/e_niederelbe.php

"...apples have been grown in the region for the past 50 years which places Dodow at the centre of a 2500-hectare, self-contained fruit growing region.
