sponson Explanation: This is one of the two air-filled tanks on which the helicopter may land on the sea, assuming it to be an air-sea rescue job. It's the "pontoon" on the sides of a seaplane or canoe to assist its stability in water. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2007-02-20 14:05:18 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Colloquially known as a "float", because the chopper can float on it...
