Pour Sigmund Freud, la pulsion se divise en affect et en représentation.

* L'affect est une impression, un ressenti, une qualité émotionnelle.
* La représentation est une idée, un concept.

Plus précisément, l'affect et la représentation sont deux représentants psychiques de la pulsion : cette dernière, tout autant somatique, s'exprime dans les deux domaines de l'affect et de la représentation. La pulsion ne saurait donc être réduite à l'affect, de même que l'affect ne peut en tout état de cause être compris comme synonyme d'émotion.
