Non trovo niente in italiano sull'argomento se hai tempo cerca attraverso le pubblicazioni citate.
Una cosa sembra chiara: lo strumento che serve comne riferimento è una lastra con biglie/sfere. Se non trovi niente in italiano puoi tentare una traduzione letterale secondo me.
lastra con sfere è usato anche in metrologia (= plaque à billes) pur non corrispondente al tuo contesto
