In origine venivano chiamati istrioni gli attori etruschi giunti a Roma che, non parlando il latino, si limitavano a rappresentare spettacoli di pantomima, danza, e musica; in seguito furono così chiamati dai romani tutti gli attori, dalla tragedia alla commedia.
