non conoscendo per niente il contesto direi "trattenere particelle"... in genere si tratta di questo e le particelle vengono misurate in micron e non in millimetri.
Comunque da verificare, v. livello basso

Quindi potrebbe trattarsi anche di particelle piuttosto grosse espresse in mm e di una pompa che sarebbe in grado di aspirare particelle anche grossolane senza intasarsi.. ?
