Persian (Farsi) term or phrase: Asl-e kari
At the very beginning of the Iranian film مونس, two men are being released from prison. The guards open the gate and one man steps through, but the gate starts to close again as one man is still on the other side. He somewhat jokingly says, "نبند نبند، اصل کاری هنوز مونده!"

The subtitles translate "اصل کاری" as "the main man." Is this a good translation? I see that the term can also be used more literally, as in: "Khaleh says that the main spice (asl-e kari) in her torshi is golpar; she uses both the seed and ground powder."

Asl-e kari = ?

Thanks.

the main thing/item/business
Explanation:
"kari" here is not "curry (spice)"..."kari" can mean "business" like in "ba man kari darid?" ...depending on where/how it is used, it can take on different meanings...the other suggestions for this case "main man" are good

"asl-e kari" in the torshi means the "main thing/ingredient"

the main man/the most important one

Explanation:
It means the most important one and it is used humorously to refer to the major people or things.
'Kari' is also a kind of spice.
