Which invites the question: do modern editors edit, or are they too busy busy being the boss (administrating, hiring and firing)? The Latin languages have a separate word for the editor-boss (e.g. Fr. rédacteur P. سردبیر) and for the guy who does the editing (ویرایش) (e.g. Fr. éditeur). I hope that's right - talk about wheels within wheels!

Please correct me if I am wrong...I have understood ویرایش to be used more for editing/correcting/proofreading of a text. تدوین is used more for compiling/collecting/assembling written material. In English, "editing" can be used for both. You can have an editor of an anthology or of collected works. You can have a film editor. And you can have a newspaper editor سردبیر

If we just google the phrase "تدوین کتاب", we can see that the result is more than "ویرایش کتاب". However, both of them are commonly used, I think.

For written material for publishing, we use ويرايش but for films we say تدوين

Many, many thanks! I was just wondering: is تدوین used only for the editing of films or is it also used for editing written material for publishing?

A typical example of this other sense of editing would be what would have happened with ‘The Letters of Nancy Mitford and Evelyn Waugh’: the letters had to be compiled, arranged and emended for publication.
