P-N yüzey birleşmesine elektrik gerilimi uygulandığında serbest elektronlar serbest oyuklarla (hole) birleşir, serbest elektronun boşaldığı yerde oyuk oluşur. Oluşan oyuğun yerini yeni bir elektron doldurur. Böylece hem serbest elektronların hem de serbest oyukların hareketinden ileri gelen bir elektrik akımı oluşur.
