My sentence for translation: The refugees waiting all along the keyside hoped that the foreign ships would soon take them aboard.

Indeed, if you look at the quayside, it is very long indeed, running past many of the important quarters of the city.

"Kordon" refers to the area/main thoroughway along the coast. It happens to include the ports/quays as well...
Kordon is where the Greek army had initially set their feet and started the occupation and where they were "driven to the sea" at the end of the war. It was here that the Greeks and the minorities that wanted to leave desperately waited for the ships to take them as the Turkish army entered the city...
