"A healthy premenopausal woman with low bone density is very unlikely to be losing bone," says Ethel S. Siris, MD, osteoporosis expert at Columbia University. "So I don't believe she should be prescribed a drug such as Fosamax or Actonel." Dr. Siris adds that bone-preserving drugs may be given to premenopausal women who are taking medications such as steroids, which induce bone loss. (An exception is Evista, which should not be given to women who can still become pregnant.) That's not to say that you should shrug off low bone density or osteopenia prior to menopause. It can put you at greater risk for fractures. So make a plan.
