Occurence: Storage scald has been a serious concern for apple growers for as long as apples have been stored and marketed commercially. Susceptibility to this storage disorder varies with the variety of apple, environment and cultural practices. Granny Smith, Rome Beauty, Delicious, Winesap and Yellow Newtown are very susceptible, Gala and Fuji are moderately susceptible. Incidence and severity of storage scald is favored by hot, dry weather before harvest, immature fruit at harvest, high nitrogen and low calcium concentrations in the fruit, and inadequate ventilation in storage rooms or in packages.

Symptoms: Irregular brown patches of dead skin which can become rough when severe, developing within 3 to 7 days upon warming of the fruit following cold storage. The warm temperatures do not cause the scald but allow symptoms to develop from previous injury which occurred during cold storage. Symptoms may be visible in cold storage when injury is severe. In this case, the symptoms intensify upon warming the fruit. Scald is usually not evident until after 3 months of storage. Storage scald can involve only the skin or extend 6 mm (¼-inch) into the flesh depending on the variety. Scald can be more severe on the greener side of the fruit.

U nekim slučajevima praktikuje se izlaganje plodova višim temperaturama pred skladištenje da bi se smanjila pojava pojedinih fizioloških oboljenja kao što je skald - posmedivanje pokožice ploda. Na primer, sorta greni smit zagreva se na +22°C u trajanju od 10 - 15 dana, što utiče na smanjenje pojave skalda.

Od fizioloških bolesti spomenućemo samo skald, jer je dosta sličan sa drugim bolestima, a relativno se često javlja prilikom skladištenja i to posebno na nekim novijim sortama.

Најважније физиолошко обољење плодова које се јавља код нас је
посмеђивање покожице зелених плодова (скалд) чији симптоми се јављају након складиштења. Скалд је поготово изражен код прерано обраних плодова (Neri et al, 2005). Генерално, скалд је јачи у годинама када топлији и сушни дани претходе берби неколико седмица. Излагање температури нижој од 10°C у одређеном периоду пред бербу, умањује појаву скалда.

Explanation:
Posmeđenje kožice ploda – skald

Iako nije gljivična bolest često se javlja na sortama prvenstveno zelene boje kožice, prekasnog ili preranog termina berbe, čestih promena temperature u skladištima, dugog i neodgovarajućeg čuvanja, toplog i suvog vremena kod berbe itd. Dosta toga o mehanizmu pojave ove fiziološke bolesti je još uvek u fazi ispitivanja. Glavni simptomi su posmeđenje površine kožice u nepravilnim oblicima tokom skladištenja.



Posmeđenja se javljaju oko lenticela, a mogu preći i u dubinu mesa (sl. 10). Bolest se javlja posebno na nekim sortama (Granny smith, Macintosh, Stayman winesap). Bolest se ne manifestuje u voćnjaku, već nastaje isključivo nakon određenog perioda čuvanja.
