A fejlődésregény olyan regénytípus, amelynek a cselekménye szegényes, inkább az ábrázolt lélekállapot kialakulása folyamatának vagy egy adott személyiségnek a bemutatására törekszik. A központi figura számos élményét, tapasztalatát mutatja be, és részletesen ábrázolja, hogy ezeket hogyan dolgozza fel, hogyan építi be személyiségébe. A fejlődésregény tipikus példái azok az alkotások, amelyek egy gyermek felnőtté válását beszélik el.
