Explanation:
Der Unterschied zu "live at enormous depths" besteht wohl darin, daß die Ozeane große Tiefenunterschiede haben. Meeresgrundbewohner, wie etwa Flundern, sind schon in seichten Gewässern anzutreffen, während Fische, die in 3000 bis 5000 Metern Tiefe leben, deswegen noch nicht einmal zu den Grundbewohnern gezählt werden, wenn der Meeresgrund noch tiefer liegt.

Explanation:
Nur als Gedankenanstoss. Vielleicht findet man "fast flache/platte Lebewesen (Plattfische ??)" am Meeresgrund/Meeresboden gleich bei welcher Wassertiefe, wogegen die "fremdartig aussehenden/anmutenden Kreaturen" in der Tiefsee leben.
Vorschlag - mit Vorsicht zu geniessen!

agree  Stefan Keller: denke auch, dass "flat" hier sowas wie die Form von Rochen meint (sind auch Haie, oder?), und die halten sich dann wohl ausschließlich auf dem Meeresboden auf; also warum nicht "die am Meeresboden leben"?

agree  nettranslatorde: Ganz klar, und der Unterschied zu "dwelling in enormous depths" ist, dass diese ja nicht unbedingt auf demBoden leben müssen, sondern zum Beispiel an Stellen, wo der Ozean sehr tief ist (über 1000 Meter z.B.), bei hohem Druck u. wenig Licht :-)

Meeresgrundbewohner, wie etwa Flundern, sind schon in seichten Gewässern anzutreffen, während Fische, die in 3000 bis 5000 Metern Tiefe leben, deswegen noch nicht einmal zu den Grundbewohnern gezählt werden, wenn der Meeresgrund noch tiefer liegt.
