English term or phrase: big box retail outlet
big box/ retail warehouse floorspace
cpattenden
Superstore, großformatiger Markt
Explanation:
"Big Boxes" are very large, often sort of spartan stores, such as Home Depot, Office Depot, Toys "R" Us, etc. Equivalents in Germany would be obi Baumärkte and the like. The term Big Box seems to be taking hold in Germany, as well. The URL below is just one hit of several that I got.

Explanation:
"Hypermarkt" – "SB-Warenhaus" – "Verbrauchergroßmarkt" = "Hypermarket" = "Big Box" (Pons Fachwörterbuch – Marketing) but the German translations are all not really big enough (yet). Unfortunately, the real big boxes are even bigger. The expression fits Wal-Mart best because Wal-Mart is monstrous and sells everything. There is a good Wal-Mart parody at: http://www.big-box.com/ - "Big Box" is quite negative normally. "retail warehouse floorspace" = "Verkaufsfläche eines Hypermarkt(e)s" is rather British because the name "retail warehouse" is a good British term for the more American term "big box". By the way, "floorspace" as one word, does not show up in either NODE nor Webster's but it is used in several British Web sites as one word. For example: http://www.portsmouthcc.gov.uk/depts/plan/stuinfo/cplpfcpw.h... and http://www.ayrshire-jsu.gov.uk/publications.html - Other sites on this subject:
