Danke für das Mitdenken,
neben "maßgebend" ist sicher auch verlässlich oder glaubwürdig gut möglich. Autoritative Biographie ist im Deutschen zu wenig geläufig und ist für die hier angesprochenen Leser sicher nicht sehr vielsagend.

verläßlich, vertrauenswürdig


Explanation:
Hallo!

Authorized wäre doch autorisiert ...? Autoritative würde ich hier eher mit vertrauenswürdiger Biografie übersetzen, das wäre dann in Bezug auf den Menschen, der sie verfasst hat.

die beste Biographie


Explanation:
Ich kenne den Kontext nicht aber meist ist es so dass x Biographien über jemand im Laufe der Jahre geschrieben wurden, manche davon sind besser andere weniger gut, aber meist sind sich die Kenner einig dass eine davon DIE Biographie schlechthin ist, das könnte doch so ein Fall sein.

Explanation:
An authoritative biography is a serious and acclaimed biography (which isn't necessarily approved by the subject) while an authorised one is approved by the subject or it's family (but isn't necessarily serious and acclaimed). I would even go as far as to say both terms are almost always mutually exclusive because an authorised biography would not be as objective if it needs approval by the subject or family.

Explanation:
Ich wäre hier vorsichtig und würde "autorisiert" auf jeden Fall vermeiden. Wenn die Bio. autorisiert wäre, würde der Herausgeber das Buch wohl gleich mit "authorised" schmücken. Dass er es nicht tut, deutet darauf hin, dass das Wörtchen "authoritative" vielleicht als Ersatz genommen wird.

Es erinnert mich an "polite notice" auf Hinweisschildern, die man flüchtig als "police notice" lesen und gehorchen soll...
