From same list of MSDS strings: "Contains refined petroleum base". I know "petroleum base" only when it's used as an adjective, e.g. petroleum base oil. Does anyone have a clue?

In the translation you can skip the Base. Erde implies the base e.g. contrary to a Pflanzenoel which obviously has the base in plants.

Explanation:
Ich habe ein wenig gegoogelt, und in englischen Vergleichstexten wurde petroleum base immer in dem Sinne verwendet, dass Petroleum enthalten ist.

disagree  Katarina Berger: Petroleum ist nur ein bestimmter Siedebereich des Erdöls, daher würde ich Erdöl oder Petrol- (bei zusammengesetzten Worten) verwenden
