Looks as if most of the answers are taking this too literally; it IS intended as a joke - hence the double entendre "a (g)nome - an 'ome". And that's why it's one of them you CANNOT translated literally. Try this as one you CAN: Guy walks into a pub and..
If I were you, Peter, and it was in a text I'm translating, I think I'd just leave it in English. As David says above "Du beisst auf Granit"! :-) Search the internet for +"a gnome"+"an ome" and you'll be pretty certain that it's a cockney play on words.
Also ist meine Vorschlag doch nicht so abwägig da hier von Menschentypen, wie eben "Gnomen" die Rede ist. Es muss also nicht cockney für "home" sein.

Tut mir leid für die spärlichen Infos und den spät herbeigebrachten Kontext, war gestern leider verhindert; der Spruch fällt in einem Dialog an der Bar in einer Disco, eine unvermittelte Äußerung des Barkeepers, zwischen Sprüchen wie "komische Leute hier" und "ich hätte gerne einen Drink", also rech spärlicher Kontext.

@Goldcoaster: Meine Frage im Kasten "an den Fragesteller" ging an diesen, nicht an einen Beantworter. Den Kontext würde ich gerne vom Fragesteller erfahren, um u.a. Ihre Antwort besser einschätzen zu können. Gruß.
Es geht nicht um meinen Kontext sondern darum ob es sich um eine Behausung (cockney english) oder um ein schleierhaftes Wesen, eben einem Gnomen, handelt - je nach behandeltem Thema des Autors

Hallo Peter: wenn Du eine Übersetzung für dieses Wortspiel suchst, denke ich dass Du auf Granit beisst. Nesrin hat absolut Recht: "I 'aven't got an 'ome to go to", as the cockney might say...
