As in Rome there is, apart from the Romans, a population of statues, so apart from this real world there is a world of illusion, almost more potent, in which most men live.

I am almost sure that this is not a real Goethe quote, since I looked almost everywhere. But I thought I'd give it another try and ask here. Maybe one of you has come across this quote and knows the German original?
