In der Referenz sieht man auch, warum die Dinger 'rung' bzw. 'Ladder Diagram' heißen (das ersten Bild, mit den schwarzen 'Leiterholmen' links und rechts, sowie den roten 'Rungen').

Mit "rung" ist hier wohl die "Sprosse" eines Kontaktplans (ladder logic) gemeint, wie er in der SPS-Programmierung verwendet wird.
