(I would favor passive drains (such as a Penrose, which is basically a thin rubber tube that just keeps the skin open while the fluid drains out) rather than an active drain (such as a Blake or Jackson-Pratt, which applies suction but also can lose that suction at times). I would leave the drains in until at least several days after the drainage appears to have stopped or slowed down significantly, since it can start again even after it's appeared to stop)
