Family physicians are medical providers certified to practice Family Medicine. Family medicine is a branch of medicine similar to internal medicine. Both family physicians and internists are considered as general practitioners ( as compared to specialists, such as surgeon or dermatologist). However, they are different in that family physicians are even more "general". They can provide health care services to children, adults, elderly and women. They are everybody's doctors. They serve the PRIMARY CARE needs of everybody in the family. They do a lot of preventive work, offer more healthcare counselling and guidance. They are the "gatekeepers" of the health of the family.


if we translate it into ¼ÒÍ¥Ò½Éú, we have the risk of its being mis-interpreted as 1) the physicians HIRED by a family. 2) the Primary Care Physician (PCP) that someone chooses when he or she signs on to a managed care health insurance plan. I did hear people say ËûÊÇÎҵļÒÍ¥Ò½Éú £¨which means PCP here).

So, using ¼ÒÍ¥Ò½Éúto render family physician is a little bit ambiguous.

Adding ±£½¡ may better reflect the true nature of the profession. I just feel we don't need to literally translate "physician" here. Just using ҽѧ»á may suffice.
