Investors and the media have been taking pot shots at boards and directors everywhere, as shareholders exercise their rights more vigorously. Some sectors have responded more energetically to criticism than others. In the FTSE ISS Corporate Governance global indices, banks have moved up the rankings. Last year they came a tardy 14th out of 18 in the sector compliance rankings but this year they have moved to eighth (see chart below). However, there is still a long way to go.
