English term or phrase: an almost pathological fury
Thucydides, like Hippocrates, ...,writes a kind of clinical report. He tries to show what actually went on during the great Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, when men's passions were roused to an almost pathological fury... He is neither pro-Athenian nor pro-Sparta, though he had earlier held command in the Athenian army. He is not interested in anecdotes, scandal, or the romantic events of history. He does have notions of right and wrong -- prejudices, if you like. He pretty clearly prefers order, quiet, and the decencies of social life to rebellion, intense competition, uncertainties, cruelties, and violence. But he is no preacher. He is observing and checking the records of a dramatic struggle among certain human beings, and preserving it so that those who follow him may be wiser in human ways.
