agree  Alexander C. Thomson: The Persians call this kind of exchange of pleasantries ‘taraf’, but is its cognate not used in this sense in Arabic?

  -> Thanks Alexander. I see what you mean, the Arabic cognate you are referring to is "tarifa/tara'if" and it means the same as in Persian apparently. However, I don't think that this is what the writer of the original means here.
