This is an old Biblical word, which also has a "long" version which almost equals 24 inches.

I think it would be understood, although people are somewhat vague as to how long a cubit actually is.

The word is reasonably well known, because it comes in the popular biblical story of Noah's ark, where Noah was given the measurements quite precisely in cubits. It was a subject in the mediaeval Mystery plays, and at least one more modern version.

And there have been discussions ever since about the feasibility, given the technology of the supposed era, whether the vessel would float and plenty more...
