So far I have called this person an instructor, because that is his/her basic function. He shows new trainees the equipment in the factory and workshops and instructs them in its use, safety procedures etc.

However, the firm wants this person to be more than just an instructor or foreman at the beginning, and be ready to introduce new employees to the social side and company culture etc. as well.

They're young apprentices or trainees, real beginners, so 'coach' sounds too elaborate to me.

I don't think 'Sponsor' is quite appropriate in this context either.

Explanation:
Instructor sounds perfect to me, but if you are looking for a different term, maybe tutor could do. Coach and Sponsor, I don't think they fit, no. Teacher is too academic. Educator sounds like someone in a vuggestuen, nej. So...
