you are right 'roum' in Arabic means Greek, the reason is that Arabs were aware only of the Eastern Roman Empire which adopted the Greek culture. so any greek is 'roumi'
on the other hand the western roman empire already been dissolved and living; out of history; in the worst conditions of the dark ages ..

In Lebanon for example, there is a difference between "room orthodox" and "room catholic" and in both instances the translation is "greek" for "room" as in "greek orthodox "and "greek catholic". The "greek catholics" also known in Arabic as " qawatili" The understanding is that the "rooms" are the "yunans" and the "romans" are the "latins" asin the "Roman catholic church, latin rite".
