agree  Fuad Yahya: This is correct, but it is not equivalent to "justice of the peace." In the U.S., we use the expression "trial judge," defined as "judge at a trial court." A trial court is a court of first instance.

  -> Many thanks. I was referring to the English legal courts system where the Justice of the Peace is ofter the first instance judge. I'm not familiar with the court system in the USA
