SPAIN & LatAm. The actual term I have to translate is "USD - Dolar americano". Normally, I would translate this as "USD - US dollar".

However, as the dollar is the official currency of the United States - the place where it is issued - but also of other countries such as Ecuador, El Salvador or Zimbabwe, apparently, I'm wondering whether "American dollar" might be a better option.

English translation:United States dollar
Explanation:
El Salvador is a small country in Central America and its official unit of currency is the US Dollar. The country adopted the US dollar as its currency in 2001. Previously, its national currency was the El Salvadoran Colon and one colon was equal to 100 centavos. The state of El Salvador used the colon currency from 1892 to 2001. The word “colon” was derived from the name of Christopher Columbus as, in Spanish, his name was translated to “Cristobal Colon.” Although the government of El Salvador changed the state’s currency from the colon to US dollars in 2001, some stores or restaurants still issue change in colons. The US dollars are issued by the Federal Reserve. It is one of the most stable currencies in the world.

This has revived memories of the hyperinflation that ravaged Zimbabwe until 2009, when it dumped the Zim dollar, which no-one trusted, in favour of the US dollar. The government banned the use of the US dollar nine months ago and surging inflation has been one of the predictable results. In a U-turn, the central bank said on Thursday 26 March it was bringing back the peg to the US dollar.

You may be surprised to learn that Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar as their currency. This came about in the year 2000 when their own currency, the “sucre,” took a nosedive due to a financial crisis. The local population started using dollars and it wasn’t long before the government acknowledged USD as the official currency.

I agree that many people don't realise that the United States and America aren't the same.

American dollar(s)

Explanation:
USD is the international currency code, an abbreviation used in financial documents, etc. Sometimes this is clear on its own but sometimes not so clear,
for example:

Canadian dollar = CAD
Euro = EUR

https://www.iban.com/currency-codes

If the code appears keep as is, you can always put American dollars in brackets afterward.

To be exact, "US dollar" is not the same as "U.S. dollar".
The only dollars in the Americas, (North, Central, South) are in Surinam, Guyana and in the Caribbean, for example, BBD Barbadian dollars.

The dollar most commonly used in South America is the American dollar, and the Canadian dollar is, well, the Canadian dollar.
American Dollar, US$, USD, or U.S. dollar with periods would be correct.

Asker: The thing is, because the code USD appears, I would normally translate it as "USD - US dollar", not "USD - American dollar"...
