In the first paragraph, I translated "valor esperado" as 'desired variable', based on my (limited) understanding of the Poisson distribution. Now I come to "esperanza de la variable." Is it the same thing? Is this also the 'desired variable'?

La distribución de probabilidad de Poisson es una distribución de variable aleatoria discreta (para el caso que analizamos, el número de defunciones es discreto) y se caracteriza por un parámetro λ que es el valor que asume el promedio (**valor esperado**) de la variable. Además, en esta distribución, la varianza (medida de variabilidad respecto del promedio) también es igual a λ.

Hi Muriel, lambda is the expected value in the Poisson distribution, so yes it does apply throughout your piece of text.
