high imperial period Explanation: I think your first idea is best. This is the most natural way of saying it. If you just take a look at these search results you'll see that professional historians regularly use this expression: http://www.google.es/search?num=100&biw=1024&bih=653&site=we... You'll also see that although some people capitalise "Imperial", most put it all in lower case. The only alternative to "high" is "early", but I wouldn't use it, because different people understand different things by it (it often denotes the first century or so), whereas everyone understands "high" which goes up to AD 235 and the crisis of the Severans. There's no need to add "Roman", I think, and in fact I wouldn't, because it will seem clumsy, given that the context of the whole article is clearly the Roman period. Everyone will understand "high imperial" correctly. |
