History / town chairman
English term or phrase: town chairman
I know it sounds a simple question, but ... this is it. I'm kind of lost here cause it's a magazine text presenting this person who got to be a town chairman years ago, but it doesn't mean he was a mayor. I believe we have nothing similar to a "presidente municipal" here in Brazil. And the context doesn't mention any committee he was affiliated to ... any suggestions?

many thanks to all!

Town of Lisbon - TOWN CHAIRMAN Matt Gehrke, citing "multiple important fiscal and policy issues" that he would "like to see through," has announced he will seek a third term as TOWN CHAIRMAN.

He said the TOWN BOARD will have to decide whether to appoint someone to fill the vacancy or whether to hold a special election in conjunction with the 2013 spring municipal elections.
