The City

Since this is an architectural text, the focus should be historical. The fact that it is the financial district is only peripheral to the main point, which is that is the historic original city (everything else is Greater London) and still a political entity in its own right, called the City of London, with legal boundaries and its own government, governed by the Lord Mayor of London. I think the ONLY solution is 'Ciudad de Londres'.

Thanks for that Shakedray, which made me realise that this is an excerpt from the book that is sitting on my bedside table at the moment! Coincidence... The main player in this part of the book lives in the City (in Cheapside to be exact), and there is stress on the fact that she has risen above humble origins and left the suburbs behind. I would have gone for "City" (Fiona and Eileen's take) to indicate this particular area of London, but, and despite the capitals, I think because of the later use of "City of London", we should go with "Ciudad de Londres", since we can't say "City de Londres" imo.

The City which lay below was a charnel house built on multilayered bones centuries older than those which lay beneath the cities of Hamburg or Dresden. Was this knowledge part of the mystery it held for her, a mystery felt most strongly on a bell-chimed Sunday on her solitary exploration of its hidden alleys and squares? Sometimes in this solitary perambulation it seemed that her own footsteps were muted, as if some part of her were afraid to waken the dead who had walked these streets and had known the same silence. Estaba todo convencida de que hablaba del distrito financiero, hasta que leí las dos opciones de Sol (por cierto, ojo con respuestas múltiples, Sol!) y me entró la duda al examinar más de cerca el original.
