French term or phrase: Hébergeant
The phrase is in an official form to be filled in by a foreign national wishing to work etc in France and needing to provide proof of residence. This is the case where he is being put up by someone - not specifically for payment.

"Attestation d’hébergement
Et quittance de loyer, facture d’eau, de gaz, d’électricité, de téléphone (sauf portables) au nom de **l’hébergeant** datée de moins de 3 mois
Et carte d’identité française ou de séjour de **l’hébergeant** en cours de validité"

I can' t come up with an appropriate term, other than landlord - and that seems not to cover someone who harbours someone for free - a member of the family for example. Any help would be appreciated.

disagree  Paul Reeve: An "attestation d'hébergement" is provided by someone who officially lodges you for free. Landlords are providers of paid accommodations. EDIT: I'm the Canadian "hébergé" of friends myself, who are not my landlords since I don't give them money.

  -> I am the "hébergeant" of African friends. Therefore I had to prepare and sign this "attestation d'hébergement". It has nothing to do with the fact of lodging for free or not (double checked with the prefecture's social services office).
