Como no tiene terminados sus estudios puede trabajar solo como pasante, en su nivel de 'degree candidate' as he does not have his degree in hand yet.

agree  Roel Blomsma: this is the closest to what I know it represents. There is no exact word to decribe it. 'Intern' and 'Trainee' are definitly incorrect.

expert

Explanation:
Pasante is someone who has studied the career but has not comleted the requirements or thesis for the degree certificate. I think expert is a good idea as it indicates knowledge but not a "título"

disagree  Henry Hinds: An expert is a "perito" and a "pasante" does not qualify as an expert. Well, we're just talking about "pasante", and sorry, but "expert" is not the correct answer.
5 hrs
-> a "perito" has an official qualification whereas a "pasante" doesn't. An expert does not have to have a certificate, only expertise. "Perito" could be translated as technician or similar according to the field.

agree  Marsha Way: For Mexico, this is the option I was going to propose. It means they completed their studies, but have not fulfilled the requirements (dissertation defense) to get their diploma or degree. Huge phenomenon in Mexico. More "pasantes" than graduates!
