Spanish term or phrase: Ulas

I am aware that an answer to a previous question gave "credits" as the translation for "ulas" in a university transcript, but this does not fit here because under the column heading "ulas/creditos" there are two separate columns of figures. Thus for one course under "Ulas" one has "30" and under "creditos" "2". This is a Colombian university transcript.

I have a transcript from Colombia that identifies class credit as both créditas, and a separate column as "ulas". Does anyone know the meaning/translation of ulas?

Hola,

ULA means Unidad de Labor Académica. Pero esas unidades varían de acuerdo a las materias o facultades.
Por ejemplo: Las horas de trabajo del estudiante deben corresponder al número de créditos; así, 1 crédito (ULA) corresponde a 3 horas de trabajo semanal para el estudiante.

Or "hours per academic unit" (ULA) - change the word credit to academic to avoid any confusion that may? exist with terms in other columns, but ultimately, the choice is yours - just a thought, but I like your option too!

I often add notes in square brackets, and thus like your suggestion. But how should I translate "cred."? As "hours per credit unit?"

Thomas: I see two options. Yours is a possibility. The other, although longer (and depending on space availability), you may want to think of adding ULA along with an explanation as there may not be a U.S. equivalent? Your thoughts? TD

Thanks, the large number of ulas for graduation does indeed suggest that these large numbers in the column of my document can correspond to your definition of "ulas".

Sorry, I should have said trimestre (and not semester) in my first comment to your query. This is my take on it. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable on the Colombian education system could explain further.

I hope that I have responded adequately to your concerns. It would appear that 40 to 90 ULAS would correspond to approx. 4 months to perhaps a year´s course work, assuming that there are roughly 12 weeks in a trimestre (3 months).

The only English link that I was able to find made reference to quote: Course work is measured in Unidades de Labor Académica (ULA). A minimum of 3,200 ULAs is required for a Licenciatura.

Hi Thomas: Based on my research, 1 ULA = 3 hours per week. Therefore, a semester for argument sake may be 12 weeks x 3 hours per week = 36 hours or 12 ULAs.

I note that an answer suggests that one "ula" corresponds to 3 hours a week, but all the number under the "ulas" column in my text are very large -- randing from 40 to 90, while under "créd." the numbers are very small -- ranging up to 6. Could an "ula" be so large? Or do these numbers refer to the total number of hours per semester for the course? Any thoughts?
