Spanish term or phrase: contrato aleatorio
I appreciate that "aleatorio" means random or chance, but is there a specific legal phrase for this type of contract please. Unfortunately, giving the whole phrase from which this comes would shed no extra light on the meaning.

TIA.

aleatory contract
Explanation:
An aleatory contract is a mutual agreement the effects of which---both advantageous and disadvantageous, whether in regard to some or all the parties---are triggered by the occurrence of an uncertain event. In this type of contract one or both parties assume risk. A fire insurance policy is a form of aleatory contract, since a person will not receive the proceeds of the policy unless a fire occurs, an event that is uncertain.

Thank you. It was quite a literal translation in the end! It's the first time that I've come across such a contract.

Thanks also to other contributors - it seems that all answers may be appropriate, but in the end, I was swayed by West's.

agree  Maria: I believe this is most widely used in the legal jargon, although aleatory is also correct. In the firm I worked for, client's signed a contingency fee agreement

hazardous contract

Explanation:
= the performance of which depends on an uncertain event (West's)

Por el contrato aleatorio, una de las partes, o ambas recíprocamente, se obligan a dar o hacer alguna cosa en equivalencia de lo que la otra parte ha de dar o hacer para el caso de un acontecimiento incierto, o que ha de ocurrir en tiempo indeterminado.

aleatory contract

Explanation:
Aleatory contract is a concept itself!!
aleatory contract n : a contract whose performance by one party depends on the occurrence of an uncertain contingent event (but if it is contingent on the outcome of a wager it is not enforceable)
