ci ho pensato e ripensato, lavandomi i denti, ma non mi vengono in mente alternative valide a repressa (accumulata, precedentemente insespressa, bleah).
credo però che sia un di più che si può benissimo evitare del tutto di tradurre, perché mi risulta piuttosto difficile pensare a episodi di ansia non 'repressa'. anzi, per dirla tutta, l'espressione unreleased anxiety mi suona proprio strana.
sempre secondo contesto naturalmente, perché sappiamo tutti che represso (pur essendo un termine con connotazioni ben specifiche e che rimanda a tutta una serie di costrutti teorici) va sempre molto nel linguaggio di tutti i giorni.

poi, preferirei episodi rispetto ad attacchi o crisi, perchè oggi questi due termini sono molto spesso associati ai famisi attacchi di panico, che sono (o almeno sono supposed to be...) qualcosa di un po' diverso da un episodio di ansia.

forse anche qui non mi sono espressa bene e ho lasciato degli impliciti... per farla semplice e breve: si può parlare di ansia come stato interno o di ansia a livello comportamentale=manifesto. \'bouts of anxiety\' appartiene decisamente e di per sé al secondo caso. senza bisogno, mi sembra, di aggiungere lapalissianamente che prima del sopraggiungere del bout si era in assenza di bout :)

mi sorge (finalmente :) un dubbio - io tutto questo l\'ho scritto interpretando unreleased come previously unreleased... qualcosa che \'scoppia\' in quanto precedentemente inespressa...
e tendo a pensare che se avessero voluto gestire episodi di ansietà interna, non manifesta, se insomma si fossero riferiti al vissuto, allo stato, proprio come non \'agito\', non avrebbero usato il termine bout... né il termine unreleased...
ma in effetti non è detto... non so chi abbia scritto questa frase... e in questo caso potresti forse dire \'l\'occasionale comparsa di stati d\'ansia\'
(o anche vissuto, o magari aggiungere stato interno...)

esoft: back at splitting hairs, I think --- I believe that "unreleased anxiety" is a misnomer and redundant - ....it's anxiety ---> once it's out it' s a compulsion...the point is that "anxiety"is " something that is unreleased" -medically, only anxiety exists

-> certamente, e chi non ha un'esperienza del genere :) ma nel momento in cui si parla di 'bout 'credo che il fare finta di niente sia escluso - anche se ora mi è venuto un dubbio - vedi sopra :)

Giuliana Criscuolo-Bruce: Sono d'accordo. E' molto meglio optare per una traduzione non letterale, e tutte le tue considerazioni mi sembrano giustissime. L'ansia repressa mi sembra un controsenso.
