Boa tarde!
Permito-me ler esta fala inicial em língua portuguesa (está disponível uma tradução da mesma para nossos convidados estrangeiros): uma língua que me adotou e amo em seus tons e sutilezas.
Gostaria de dar as boas vindas a todos que aqui vieram hoje, quem de mais longe, quem de mais perto, participar do nosso VIII International Archai Seminar “On Pythagoreanism”.
Trouxemos para o Brasil esta semana 18 entre os maiores especialistas mundialmente reconhecidos sobre o tema. É para nós um sonho realizado poder ter aqui sentada nossa Bibliografia, e não necessariamente em ordem alfabética. Agradeço especialmente a disponibilidade de deixar famílias e outros projetos para colaborar conosco. Diria que é um encontro histórico, pela quantidade e qualidade de especialistas aqui reunidos para falar de pitagorismo. Mas deixarei à história a avaliação sobre o impacto e o valor deste seminário.

O grande objetivo da Cátedra é aquele de qualificar novos pesquisadores: isso me lembra de agradecer aos tantos alunos, de graduação e pósgraduação, sem a ajuda dos quais a organização deste evento não seria possível. Agradeço especialmente a Mariana Belchior e a Talita Vianna.
Nossas conferências e debates estarão sendo transmitidas ao vivo pela web, graças à grande capacidade técnica de Jonatas Rafael Alvares, que assina também não somente a identidade visual do evento (cartazes, folders da programação, etc.), mas também a própria transmissão onstream. Agradeço neste caso a ANPOF (Associação Nacional de PósGraduação em Filosofia) por transmitir o seminário na íntegra em seu portal web. Jonatas foi também quem diagramou o livro dos PréPrints, que chamamos Hypomnemata, com uma referência jocosa sugerida pelo amigo Costantinos Macris, Costas, aqui presente. Quisemos privilegiar o debate, por isso fizemos o grande esforço de preparar este livro e pedimos a todos para – na exposição oral dos próximos dias – apresentassem um breve resumo de 20 - 25 minutos somente.
Permitam-me ainda agradecer o colega Marcus Mota: filólogo, historiador, músico e dramaturgo, que além de estar presente como palestrante do evento, nos ajudou a organizar uma performance teatral “pitagórica”, que acontecerá nesta Quintafeira, na recepção que teremos no belíssimo prédio, projetado pelo célebre arquiteto italiano Nervi, na Embaixada da Itália. E registrar a presença no seminário da amiga e colega de Departamento Clara Acker, que quis gentilmente participar do seminário com o entusiasmo que sempre a caracteriza.
E por falar de arquitetura, é impossível não sublinhar o kairós de termos este seminário na cidade de Brasília, que a grande poetisa portuguesa Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, já definiu, em 1961, como “desenhada por Pitágoras”:

Seria tentado em fazer uma exegese do poema para mostrar, de fato, quanto de grego e antigo, quanto de Atenas e Roma há no projeto de Brasília. Limito-me a exemplificar isso com a memória de Hipódamo de Mileto matemático, arquiteto e filósofo pitagórico do V século a.C.. Suas plantas urbanas em “grade hipodâmica” apresentavam ruas largas e retas cortando-se em ângulos de 45 e 135 graus. Ele organizou sua cidade ideal em um sistema tripartido: o terreno se dividia em seções destinadas à religião, a assuntos públicos e a assuntos privados; a cidade se organizava em seções separadas de artesãos, fazendeiros e soldados. Exatamente como em Brasília.
Permitam-me uma última palavra sobre a imagem que quisemos como sýmbolon deste seminário. O desenho de Gerscino que se refere à celebre história da amizade entre “Damon and Pythias”, colocada duramente à prova pelo tirano Dionisio II, simboliza a philía pitagórica, que espero possa, ao final de intensos debates e calorosos disagreements, restar como a memória mais profunda deste nosso venue.
É um prazer agora introduzir a participação neste vento do estimado colega Walter Burkert.
Walter Burkert dispensa apresentações, pois é – creio – desde os anos Sessenta, leitura obrigatória para qualquer um que queria se iniciar ao estudo do pitagorismo. Allow me to read this opening speech in the portuguese tongue (a translated version is available for all our foreign guests): a tongue which has adopted me, leaving me lovestruck with its tones and subletities.
I would like to welcome everyone who has come here today, from near and far, to participate in our VII International Archai Seminar “On Pythagoreanism”.
We have brought 18 of the foremost experts on the theme from around the world to spend this week here in Brazil. It is a dream come true to be able to have our bibliography sitting here with us in this auditorium – and here they don’t need to be in alphabetical order. I would especially like to thank their availability, leaving their families and projects behind to collaborate with us. I would say this is a historic meeting, considering the quantity and quality of specialists gathered here to discuss Pythagoreanism. But I will leave to history the evaluation of the impact and value of this
gathering.
All of this would not be possible were it not for the effective and generous support of both research financing agencies which operate at a national level, CAPES from the Ministry of Education and CNPq from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Inovation.
I would also like to give special thanks to the Department of Research and Graduate Studies of the University of Brasilia, which has allowed me the great personal pleasure of having with me five friends and colleagues from Brazil. For years we have been consolidating a koinonía of projects and goals: Miriam Campolina, Dennys Garcia Xavier, Edrisi Fernandes, Fernando Rey Puente, Fernando Santoro.
And so the Archai group reaches its 8th International Archai Seminar, celebrating 10 years of the groups existence with the honor of being included into the world-wide web of UNESCO Chairs, the one and only UNESCO Chair in the field of philosophy in our country. We believe that this honor is due to the work we have performed over the years developing academic activities related to the plural origins of Western thought, promoting seminars and courses and qualifying new researchers and publications on the subject: in fact, the Archai UNESCO Chair publishes 2 book series (Archai and Catedra) and a printed and electronic journal (Archai). An approach that tries to reach a historical perspective of the origins (as in the Greek archaí) of the scientific and cultural ideas which currently guide Western thought has become drastically relevant in an international, political and intellectual context of crisis of cultural paradigms related to the tradition of the European matrix. This tradition has been challenged to rediscover the "treasures" of its identities in mutation through an open and enriching dialogue with "other" traditions.
The greatest goal of the Chair is to qualify new researchers: this reminds to thank the many students, both graduates and undergraduates, without whose help the organization of the seminar would have been impossible. I would especially like to thank Mariana Belchior and Talita Vianna.
Our conferences and debates will be broadcasted live on the web, thanks to the great technical abilities of Jonatas Rafael Alvares, who is behind not only the visual identity of the event (posters, schedule folders, etc…), but also the online stream. I would like to thank the ANPOF (National Association of Graduate Studies in Philosophy) for transmitting the entirety of the seminar on their website. Jonatas is also behind the layout of the pre-prints book, which have called Hypomnemata, a tongue-in-cheek reference suggested by our friend Constantinos Macris Costas, who is here with us today. We want to promote debates, so we have gone to great lengths to prepare this book so that we may ask everyone to only present a brief overview of around 20 to 25 minutes during their speeches over the following days.
Allow me to thank my colleague Marcus Mota: philologist, historian, musician and playwright, who, other than being here as a speaker in the event, helped us prepare a “Pythagorean” theatrical performance, which will happen in the reception which we will have in the beautiful building of the Italian Embassy, designed by the celebrated Italian architect Nervi. I would also like to point out the presence of my friend and department colleague Clara Acker, who has kindly agreed to participate in this seminar with the enthusiasm which has always characterized her.
Speaking of architecture, it is impossible not to underline the kairós of holding this seminar in the city of Brasilia, which the great Portuguese poetess Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen defined, in 1961, as being “designed by Pythagoras”:

*Candango is the name given to those who worked in the construction of Brasilia. Today it is commonly used to refer to people born and raised in the city.
Brasilia, Pythagora’s daughter, is, then, part greek.
I am tempted to make an exegesis of the poem to show how much there is in fact of greek and ancient, of Athens and Rome in the project of Brasilia. I will limit myself to demonstrating this with the memory of the Pythagorean mathematician, architect and philosopher Hippodamus of Miletus, from the V Century BCE. His urban plans in “Hippodamian grids” had large and straight roads intersecting at angles of 45 and 135 degrees. He organized his ideal city in a tripartite system: the territory was divided into regions destined to religion, public matters and private matters; the city was organized in separate sections designated to artisans, farmers and soldiers. A certain other city is brought to mind.
Allow me to finish by briefly commenting on the image we have picked as the sýmbolon of this seminar, a Guercino drawing which refers to the famous story of the friendship between Damon and Pythias, put so harshly to test by the tyrant Dionysus II. It symbolizes the Pythagorean philia which we hope will be, after intense debates and heated disagreements, the deepest memory you will hold of this seminar.
It is a pleasure to now introduce the participation in this event of our esteemed colleague Walter Burkert. He foregoes introductions, for since the sixties he has been compulsory reading for anyone who wishes to study Pythagoreanism. Unable to make it here personally, he has sent a greetings video to our seminar, thanks to the generous help of Cristoph Riedweg. I can’t think of a better way to start our Pythagorean week. Mercados de luxo da Europa, EUA e Canadá estão levando ipê da Amazônia à extinção
Relatório mostra que Brasil é fonte de 96% dos ipês exportados da floresta sul-americana. Governo dificulta a fiscalização e barrou maior proteção da árvore na convenção sobre comércio de espécies ameaçadas de extinção.
Pisos e móveis de ipê estão na moda em obras luxuosas no mundo todo. A demanda pela madeira estimula degradação e desmatamento na Amazônia, facilitados por fracas proteções ambientais e comerciais. Quase tudo o que é consumido atualmente vem do Brasil. “As populações de ipê diminuíram severamente nos últimos 30 anos e podem desaparecer da Amazônia”, alerta relatório da Forest Trends.
O balanço mostra que 96% (451 mil metros cúbicos de 470 mil) dos ipês exportados da Pan-Amazônia entre 2017 e 2021 vieram do Brasil. Nesses 5 anos, as vendas cresceram 76% em relação ao período 2010-2016. Os maiores compradores foram Europa, Estados Unidos e Canadá, seguidos por Israel, China, Coreia do Sul, Japão e Índia.
Crise econômica, pandemia e demanda mundial inflacionaram o preço da madeira. O valor do m3 do ipê exportado cresceu 63% do início de 2016 a dezembro do ano passado, pulando de US$ 2.613 para US$ 4.265 (cerca de R$ 21 mil na cotação atual). O maior salto foi em 2021 (ver gráfico abaixo). “Ao mesmo tempo, o controle ambiental cai vertiginosamente no governo Jair Bolsonaro”, ressaltou Rômulo Batista, da campanha Amazônia do Greenpeace. Em março deste ano, o m3 do ipê alcançou a US$ 4.360 no mercado internacional.
Como mostramos, 98% das multas ambientais na Amazônia estão paradas desde 2019. Relatório do Ibama revelou que ao menos 5 mil autos de infração de 2020 podem prescrever por atrasos burocráticos. “Muitas multas envolvem ilícitos florestais. O valor do ipê é o maior motivador da abertura de estradas, degradação e desmatamento regionais, inclusive em áreas protegidas”, lembrou Batista.
As variadas espécies de ipê têm madeiras belas, duras e resistentes à chuva e ao sol. Quase todas estão no Brasil, com parentes na Bolívia, Peru, Equador e Paraguai, onde é chamado “lapacho”. Os ipês amarelo e roxo da Amazônia brasileira são listados como ameaçados de extinção pela União Internacional Para Conservação da Natureza (IUCN, sigla em Inglês).
O volume médio de madeira do ipê é de apenas 0,52 m3 para cada hectare de floresta, considerado baixo na comparação a outras espécies. São raríssimas as regiões com maior densidade. A espécie exige de 80 a 100 anos para se tornar adulta, inviabilizando plantios comerciais. Toda a extração, tanto legal quanto criminosa, ocorre em áreas naturais, ou seja, não foram plantadas.
Relatório apoiado pela Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz da Universidade de São Paulo (ESALQ/USP) mostra que planos de manejo autorizados por órgãos públicos têm indícios de fraudes. O estudo apontou que empresas inflacionam a quantidade de ipês para esquentar madeira removida de áreas não autorizadas, incluindo terras indígenas e unidades de conservação.
“(Nos planos, fraudadores) mudam nomes de espécies manejadas e inventam disponibilidades de ipês de até 12 m3 por hectare para mascarar a remoção ilegal de outros locais. Quanto mais perto de áreas protegidas, maior era a inflação dos dados. Se essa rapina persistir, teremos extinções de ipê em regiões de menor densidade”, contou o pesquisador Edson José Vidal da Silva, do Laboratório de Silvicultura Tropical da ESALQ/USP.
O mapeamento da Forest Trends destaca que a busca por ipês está amarrada a crimes nas porções central e sudoeste da Amazônia. Nessa, a Zona de Desenvolvimento Sustentável de Abunã-Madeira, antes conhecida como Amacro, se tornou uma nova frente de desmatamento. “Derrubadas e grilagem avançam na floresta por estradas abertas por criminosos buscando lucrativos ipês”, ressaltou Batista, do Greenpeace.
Evitar a extinção da espécie passa por incluí-la no Anexo II da Convenção sobre o Comércio Internacional das Espécies Silvestres Ameaçadas de Extinção, o Cites. A medida freou o corte predatório do mogno, intenso até o início dos anos 2000. “A medida não é uma moratória, mas garante que sejam mantidas mais árvores na floresta para a regeneração da espécie”, explicou Vidal da Silva, da ESALQ/USP.
Propostas construídas desde 2017 por Brasil e Equador para ampliar a proteção do ipê na Cites foram barradas pelo governo Jair Bolsonaro, em 2019. A decisão foi informada por membros da Embaixada Brasileira durante reunião em março daquele ano com a Associação Internacional de Madeireiros dos Estados Unidos (IWPA, sigla em inglês), conforme mostra cópia de e-mail obtido pelo InfoAmazonia.
Conforme o relatório da Forest Trends, uma mudança de status na convenção garantiria maior atenção à espécie e possíveis substitutas em alfândegas. Isso ajudaria a conservar a variedade de árvores e a combater o tráfico de madeiras. Ao mesmo tempo, a listagem do ipê na Cites pode ampliar a derrubada e o comércio de outras árvores amazônicas ainda não ameaçadas de extinção.
“É um cenário conhecido. Por esta razão, não basta listar espécies na convenção da Cites, mas também trabalhar com os governos para melhorar a fiscalização e com os mercados para diversificar as espécies de madeira menos conhecidas de forma sustentável”, finalizou Marigold Norman, uma das autoras do estudo e diretora-associada da Forest Trends.

Luxury markets in Europe, the US, and Canada are driving the Amazonian ipe to extinction
Report shows that Brazil is the source of 96% of the ipe wood exported from the South American rainforest. The Bolsonaro administration hinders environmental inspections and blocked further protection of the Ipe in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Flora and Fauna.
Floors and furniture made out of ipe hardwood, also known as Brazilian Walnut, are fashionable in luxurious homes and urbanism projects around the world. The demand for its wood stimulates the degradation and deforestation of the Amazon, facilitated by weak environmental and commercial protections. Almost all the ipe consumed around the world today comes from Brazil. “Ipe populations have declined severely in the last 30 years and may disappear from the Amazon”, warns a Forest Trends report.
The balance shows that 96% (451 thousand cubic meters of 470 thousand) of the ipes exported from Pan-Amazonia between 2017 and 2021 came from Brazil. Sales grew 76% in this period compared to 2010-2016. The largest buyers were Europe, the United States, and Canada, followed by Israel, China, South Korea, Japan, and India.
Economic crises, the pandemic, and global demand have inflated the price of wood. The cost of a cubic meter of exported ipe grew 63% from the beginning of 2016 to December 2021, jumping from US$2,613 to US$4,265 (about R$21 thousand at the current exchange rate). The biggest jump was in 2021 (see chart below). "At the same time, environmental control has decreased dramatically under the Jair Bolsonaro administration," said Romulo Batista, from Greenpeace's Amazon campaign. In March this year, a cubic meter of ipe reached US$4,360 in the international market.
As we have reported, 98% of environmental fines in the Amazon have been stalled since 2019. Ibama's report revealed that at least 5,000 fines and notices from 2020 may prescribe due to bureaucratic delays. “Many fines involve forest offenses. The value of ipe is the biggest motivator for opening roads, regional degradation, and deforestation, including in protected areas,” recalled Batista.
The various species of ipe have beautiful woods, hard and resistant to rain and sun. Almost all are in Brazil, with relatives in Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Paraguay, where it is called “lapacho”. The yellow and purple ipes of the Brazilian Amazon are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The average volume of ipe wood is only 0.52 m3 for each hectare of forest, considered low when compared to other species. Regions with high density are very rare. Ipe seedlings need 80 to 100 years to mature into adults, making commercial plantations unfeasible. All extraction, both legal and criminal, occurs in natural areas, that is, they were not planted.
A report supported by the Luiz de Queiroz School of Agriculture of the University of São Paulo (ESALQ/USP) shows that management plans authorized by public agencies have indications of fraud. The study pointed out that companies inflate the amount of ipe in a given area to "launder" wood removed from unauthorized areas, including indigenous lands and conservation units.
"(The forged plans) change the names of managed species and list ipe availability of up to 12 m3 per hectare to mask illegal logging in other locations. The closer to protected areas, the higher the data inflation. If this looting persists, the ipe will go extinct in lower-density regions,” said Edson José Vidal da Silva, a researcher at ESALQ/USP's Tropical Forestry Laboratory.
The Forest Trends survey highlights that the search for ipe trees is linked to crimes in the central and southwestern portions of the Amazon. This area, the Abunã-Madeira Sustainable Development Zone, formerly known as Amacro, has become a new deforestation hot zone. "Deforestation and land grabbing advance through the forest using roads originally opened by criminals seeking profitable ipe wood", highlighted Greenpeace's Batista.
To avoid the species' extinction, one important step is to include it in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Wild Species, CITES. The measure stopped the predatory exploration of mahogany, which had been intense until the early 2000s. “The measure is not a moratorium, but it ensures that more trees are kept in the forest for the regeneration of the species,” explained Vidal da Silva, from ESALQ/USP.
Proposals built from 2017 by Brazil and Ecuador to expand the protection of ipe in CITES were barred by the Bolsonaro administration in 2019. The decision was revealed by Brazilian diplomats during a March 2019 meeting with the International Wood Products Association (IWPA), as shown in an email obtained by InfoAmazonia.
According to the Forest Trends report, a change of status in the convention would ensure greater attention to the species and identify possible substitutes. This would help to conserve the variety of trees and combat timber trafficking. At the same time, listing the ipe in CITES can expand the felling and trade of other Amazonian trees not yet threatened with extinction.
“We have seen this scenario before. For this reason, it is not enough to list a species in the CITES convention, but also to work with governments to improve inspection and with the markets to diversify, sustainably using less known wood species”, concluded Marigold Norman, one of the study’s authors and an associate director of Forest Trends.

Source text - Portuguese A Universidade de Brasília surgiu no início dos anos 60, pelas mãos de Darcy Ribeiro, que sonhava dotar o Brasil de um centro aglutinador de consciência crítica nacional, se opondo à velha ordem e seguindo o mesmo espírito que se inaugurou com a era juscelinista de desenvolvimento do país.
Este luminoso projeto, entretanto, foi gravemente atingido - ou quase destruido - a partir do golpe militar de 64, quando a Universidade foi ocupada por tropas militares, e sobretudo com o recrudescimento da ditadura em 68 e a promulgação do AI-5. A UNB foi vítima de outras agressões, as é a memória destes dois momentos que buscamos resgatar aqui.
Translation - English The University of Brasilia was created in the early 60s by Darcy Ribeiro, who dreamed of endowing Brasil with a center in which different strands of national critical conscience could converge, opposing the old order and following in the same spirit which had been inaugurated with the nation-wide period of development of Juscelino Kubitschek's presidency.
This enlightened project, however, was gravely wounded - almost completely destroyed, in fact - by the military coup d'etat in 1964, when the university was occupied by military troops. The enactment of the AI-5 in 1968, intensifying dictatorial powers, only made the situation worse. The UnB was a victim of other agressions, but this film seeks to rescue the memories of these two key moments.

Source text - English Having each been put fairly early on into Latin, the Timaeus and the Phaedo were the two most widely read dialogues of Plato up to the early Middle Ages, when other dialogues started funneling up from North Africa into southern Spain and began being translated into Latin. And their allure is clear enough, since the first purports to show, on grounds of argument, not revelation, that the world was fashioned by god, and the second purports to show, again simply by argument, that the human soul is the real person, and that it is immortal. Christianity could not, on the face of it, have run into a greater stoke of luck: a pagan philosopher could apparently demonstrate, to themselves and any doubters, that what they themselves thought of as being primarily if not totally simply a matter of faith could in fact be established by reason.
We shall come to the Phaedo’s proofs anon. But before that we need to spend some time seeing what it is that Socrates, speaking to his friends in the jail cell just before he drinks the hemlock, is trying to prove to be immortal.
This, as it turns out, is no simple matter, since a number of senses of the word psyche are apparent in the dialogue, and they are not easily reconcilable. Indeed, just to complicate the issue, it is far from clear that Socrates knows or cares whether they are reconcilable or not. But before we get into that, let us look at some of these differing senses.
At first sight, we are still in the atmosphere of the Socratic dialogues. The soul and the body are distinct substances, such that body and soul if added up would arithmetically make two, as in the Gorgias (464b30). They are said to be able to exist ‘alone and by themselves’ when in a state of separation from each other. But puzzles begin at once. How seriously is Socrates to be taken, if he is to be taken seriously at all, when he talks of the genuine philosopher’s activity as ‘standing off’ from the body as far as he can and directing his attention to the soul (64e4ff)? If this is to be taken literally, we have, not two but three substances, body, soul, and the philosopher who possesses them. Should it be taken literally? Again, let us defer answering till we have read on and seen the whole picture.
What does Socrates have to say, in the context to which I have just adverted, about that ‘soul’ to which the genuine philosopher is supposed to be devoting his attention? From his various comments it seems clear he sees it as some sort of inner person, with all the characteristics of person but without the physicality. The philosopher’s soul is said to ‘avoid’ and ‘despise’ the body, and to seek to be ‘alone and by itself’ (65d1-2). It is said to operate with reason, and by this means to reach the truth (65b9-c2). It can be ‘troubled’ by hearing sight, pain and pleasure (65c5-7). On the face of it, all this could have been said about the philosopher, rather than about the philosopher’s soul. And indeed, as we saw, the whole passage started off talking about the philosopher, and then slipped almost imperceptibly into talking about the philosopher’s soul. As though Socrates felt the two were not really different.
As it is, what he has just said about soul makes it sound like an inner person. It can reason, it has desires, or at any rate one specific desire, that of attaining what Socrates calls ‘reality’ (65c-8-9), it can be ‘troubled’ by what owe might generally describe as ‘physical sensation’, ranging from ‘the so-called pleasures of…food and drink’(64d3-4) to (physical) pains of various sorts, and even to what we see and hear (65c5-70). Later on, Socrates will talk about the need for the soul to stay uncontaminated by the ‘follies’ of the body (67a7).
But it is still unclear just how ‘personal’ this inner person is meant to be. Most of the time Socrates seems to be stressing its cognitive faculties, and at one point he even goes so far as to call it ‘intelligence’ (dianoia) (67c2-3) when in the context a use of the word ‘soul’ would have been any reader’s expectation. Perhaps we should at this early stage call psyche, as it has been described so far, as ‘a cognitive principle with apparently highly personal characteristics’. Unlike other persons, it does not appear to have the feature of physicality, though it is clearly able to be influenced by the physical, usually to its detriment.
The nature of the influence is spelled out in the purification terminology of Orphism. The body and its pains and pleasures and desires is at best a nuisance (66a5-6, 66b7ff) and at worst an evil (66b6), and the philosopher must spend a lifetime ‘purifying’ himself from their ‘contamination’ as far as he is able. But it is only the terminology of Orphism that is being used. The purification in question is no ritual purification, but rather that commitment to wisdom and learning which for Socrates constitutes ‘philosophical virtue’ (60a1-6, 61a8, 69c2-3, 80e200). There is no true virtue, says Socrates, without intelligence (69b2).
On the other hand, there are specific Orphic beliefs about soul that Socrates seems to accept, such as life before this one (76c11-13), metensomatosis (62b), and the possibility of a series of lives to come (81eff). This soul is still very much what I have called an ‘inner person’ apparently duplicating – physicality apart - the person we know, and how it is deemed to relate to body is spelled out dramatically in several passages. It is, once incarnated, ‘bound and cemented’ within the body (82e2; cf. 92a1), which Socrates calls its ‘prison, after a manner of speaking’ (82e3) (but see n. 13, p25, TMR). But the metaphor is not one that Socrates maintains with any care. Elsewhere he talks of how the soul ‘uses’ the body (79c3), and in so doing ‘operates through sense’ (79c5), with the result that ‘it is dragged by the body towards objects that are never constant, and itself wanders in a sort of dizzy drunken confusion’ (79c6-8). The passions and pleasures of the body ‘pollute’ and ‘bewitch’ the soul (81b1ff), and by sharing the body’s beliefs and joys the soul will inevitably adopt the body’s habits (83d6-7). But the soul need not succumb; it can spend a lifetime opposing and mastering the body and its desires, ‘sometimes,’ as Socrates puts it, ‘inflicting severe and painful punishment in the course of physical training and medical treatment, sometime proceeding more gently; threatening here and admonishing there…’(74b7ff).
While Socrates is fully aware of the metaphorical nature of a good deal of such talk (as his not infrequent use of words like hosper [‘as if,’ ‘as though’] attests), what survives the deconstruction still surprises. Up to now we have seen Socrates talking as though there might be two persons, the person we know and the soul of the person we know. Now it is starting to look as though there may be three ‘persons’ to account for: the person we know, the soul of the person we know, and the body of the person we know. The body, we have now learned, has desires of its own, it enjoys pains and pleasures of its own, it has beliefs of its own (elsewhere dubbed ‘foolish and stupid’), it can be ‘threatened and admonished,’ it can drag the soul in various disreputable directions and corrupt it, and so on.
Let me stress that Socrates is talking as if there are three ‘persons’ at issue; I am making no claim that he really believes this, only that he appears to be talking as though he does. For the moment. The matter will get clarified – after a fashion – when he comes to discuss immortality.
Let us in the meantime pursue other senses of soul which turn up in the dialogue, other than ‘cognitive principle’ and ‘inner person.’ The first of these is the age-old one that we first saw in Homer, that of soul as life-force or life-carrier. This is the one that drives the first and fourth arguments for immortality; soul as ‘personal’ in any way (still less soul as a person) plays no role in the discussion.
The second of these senses is to be found in the argument for immortality from affinity. Here soul is credited with an ontological status of an intermediate nature between sense-objects and Forms, but much closer to the end of the spectrum where Forms are located than to the end occupied by sense-objects. So much so that soul is much closer to being immobile, like a Form, than mobile, like a sense object. This notion of soul appears with some suddenness, is found nowhere in earlier Greek thought, and in the Phaedo itself is found only in that particular argument.
A third sense of soul is what I have called the ‘ectoplasm’ sense of soul. Here soul seems to be conceived of as some sort of vital fluid permeating the body which, on separation from the body, retains the latter’s shape, particularly if it has been ‘tainted’ (67a5) by it during the period of their conjunction. This (very spatialist-sounding) soul can apparently be interpenetrated throughout its whole extent by the body, and it is the element of the corporeal which it ‘drags away’ after a lifetime of such interpenetration that makes it visible in graveyards and haunted houses as - a ghost.
I have mentioned these three senses only briefly, just to let them introduce themselves. We need now to look at how they operate in the contexts in which they appear. While doing so we shall have occasion to grapple with the famous arguments for immortality.
The first is the so-called cyclical argument, or argument from opposites (70c4-72e1), and runs as follows:

As subsequent argument makes clear, Socrates is not convinced that this argument can suffice of itself to prove our immortality, but he does not offer reasons why. Let us suggest a few. The first is the ambiguity of the verb gignesthai, which can mean ‘to become such-and-such’, or just ‘to come into being’, or ‘to be born’. The second is the ambiguity of what a supposed ‘opposite’ is; if cold might be legitimately considered the opposite of hot, in the sense that they can be seen as variable features of one and the same subject, it is far from clear that living and dead can be used in the same way. To say that a clothes iron is now hot, now cold, now hot again, now cold again and so on, makes immediate sense; to say that one and the same subject is now alive, now dead, now alive again, seems to stretch the use of the words alive and dead beyond all known boundaries, and indeed in the present instance to assume the very point that needs to be proved. As far as the verb gignesthai is concerned, Socrates can only make his argument if he intends the verb to be used, sometimes in its sense of ‘come to be such-and-such’ and sometimes in its sense of ‘be born’. In the first instance he can set out a series of ‘opposite’ features that seem to characterize various subjects cyclically, like the hot and cold states of our cleaning iron, and then argue that the features living and dead will operate likewise in the case of the chosen subject for discussion, soul, with the highly unconvincing result that has just been mentioned. In the second instance he can use the word gignesthai in its sense of ‘be born’, as at 70c8-d1, where he says that ‘[our souls could hardly be born again, if they didn’t already exist]’. This sense is effectively that of ‘coming to be incarnate in a body’, and is spelled out as such just a few lines after the cyclical argument comes to a close (73a1-2).
But this in turn, unfortunately, assumes the very point to be proved; one needs an argument, not simply an assertion, to convince the skeptic that what we call birth is the re-incarnation of a soul that already existed antecedently to that birth.
At a deeper level, what is problematic about the argument as a whole is a set of even more damaging assumptions. The first is the assumption that the soul is not just a life principle, but something itself alive. It is a common assumption, of course, as we have seen, from Homer onwards, but it does need to be examined. It is not at all obvious that what makes something alive and/or keeps something alive is itself a living thing, just as it is not at all obvious that the redness of a red apple is itself red. Self-predication is as problematic in the case of words like ‘life’ as it turns out to be in the case of words like ‘holy’ or ‘just’.
All that Socrates might reasonably have been expected to show by his cyclical argument is that some sort of life principle is called for in all cases where we encounter something that is alive, not that one such principle - the human soul – is something itself also alive. And his next move, as we shall see, suggests that he was aware that his broader claim was a weak one.
But before we consider this we need to point out what has to be the most disconcerting assumption all – and one running underlying all the arguments for immortality in the dialogue – and that is, that the term ‘soul’ is in fact referential. Le me hasten to add that the acceptance of the referentiality of general terms was just about universal till the time of Kant, so it should come as no surprise that Socrates adheres to it. But it remains a serious problem, leaving Socrates open to an overall charge of petitio principii subsuming all the other charges of individual pieces of fallacious reasoning to which we have already adverted.
Finally, it should be said that Socrates seems to have been significantly misled, in the argument from opposites, by an innocuous-looking ambiguity in ana-compound verbs in the Greek language. He begins his argument by suggesting that ‘being awake’ and being asleep’ are polar opposites, as are ‘being alive’ and ‘being dead’. The suggestion is reinforced by the assertion that between each of the poles there exists a two way process (genesis): in he case of waking and sleeping it is ‘falling asleep’ and ‘waking up’, in the case of ’being alive’ and ‘being dead’ it is ‘dying’ and ‘coming back to life’ (anabioskesthai). But he apparent parallelism here is an illusion, since the phrase ‘coming back to life’ involves a minimum of three states (life1 – death - life2), while ‘waking up’ involves a minimum of merely two. In the case of ‘waking up’ and ‘falling asleep’ Socrates is no doubt aware that his readers will (rightly) assume that he is talking about the correlative activities of one and the same living substance. For this reason there was no obligation for him to state the obvious by talking about ‘waking up again’; given that one and the same subject was clearly the object of discussion, ‘waking up’ was an adequate description of one element in the two-way process between its ‘opposite’ (and constantly interchanging) states ‘being asleep’ and ‘being awake’. But this cannot work in the case of ‘dying’ and ‘coming back to life’, since to assume that they too are the polar (and constantly interchanging) activities of one and the same subject is of course to assume the very to be proved.
Perhaps Socrates realized this, because he loads the dice in his own favor by talking of ‘coming back to life’. The phrase is ostensibly parallel to ‘waking up’, but it is, of course, completely different. This is quickly seen if one abandons the word ‘die’ and substitutes for it some phrase like ‘cease to exist’, ‘go out of existence’, ‘end life’. The polar opposites then reads ‘begin to exist’, ‘come into existence’, ‘begin life’, or the like, and one is still left with the problem of demonstrating that it is one and the same substance which ‘comes into existence’, goes out of existence’, etc. And this cannot be done without assuming the point to be proved.
It would be easy of accuse Socrates of a confidence-trick here, but it seems more charitable to say he has probably been misled by a major ambiguity characterizing Greek verbs beginning with the prepositional prefix ana-. The primary prepositional force (meaning ‘up’) emerges in words like anistasthai (to stand up) and anegeiresthai (to wake up), but an important secondary sense (meaning ‘again’, or ‘back’) emerges in words like anapiptein (to fall back), anametrein (to re-measure), and anabioskesthai (to come back to life). In keeping with the very precise grammatical and linguistic parallelism of his earlier examples, Socrates looks for an infinitve as closely parallel as possible to the infinitive anageiresthai (to wake up), and he finds it in the infinitive anabioskesthai (to come back to life). Grammatically, the parallelism is perfect; linguistically, however, a subtle but all-important shift has taken place, and what we are presented with is a clear, if unwitting, piece of question-begging.
This is discouraging, but we should probably just move on, the way that participants in the dialogue move on, in search of better arguments. As I mentioned, Socrates himself seems fully aware that the cyclical argument is best suited to soul in general, seen as something like
‘life-force’, rather than human soul, seen as a cognitive agent with personal characteristics. So now he attempts to combine (77c6 ff) the argument from opposites with one from recollection (anamnesis), a notion already talked about in the Meno. According to this argument, we are supposed to have the ability to recollect (anamimneskein) certain things from what can only have been a previous existence, and this will constitute the crucial evidence that the soul which undergoes cyclical change from death to life to death to life and so on is one single soul, united by the thread of individual, particular memory.
This is certainly an interesting move on Socrates’ part, and it grapples with what had been a significant weakness in the cyclical argument for immortality, and that is (assuming for argument’s sake the overall validity and soundness of the reasoning) that the soul I question was one and he same soul throughout the cyclical process; or to put it directly, tht the soul which comes to life again is my soul , not somebody else’s – a matter of great concern to Simmias and Cebes).
Does the move work? Well, let us put the matter hypothetically. If there is such a thing as a previous life, and if I can apparently recollect certain events from that world which I and only I could ever reasonably lay claim to be able to recollect – such as personal talk with the soul of my aunt Agatha on matters so private that only Aunt Agatha and I in the whole world could ever have conceivably had such a conversation, then one might indeed start thinking there was some sort of ground for my claiming that I had indeed had a previous existence.
Unfortunately, however, what Socrates, both here and in the Meno, suggests we recollect has nothing particular about it. On eyhe contrary, it is all entirely general and universal, like ‘triangularity’ in the Meno, ‘equality’ here in the Phaedo, along with several other transcendental Forms (of beauty, goodness, truth and so on [75c11-d2], now starting to appear for the first time in the dialogues). Not a word to suggest that there is a thread of personal memory in operation tying a particular soul to a uniquely personal experience recollected. Not a word to convince the skeptic that, assuming the cyclical argument to be acceptable, any soul subject to a process of coming to be incarnate, returning to another world a while, and then becoming re-incarnate, would be one and the same soul. And finally, not a word to suggest that we really should be granting, on some principle of charity, even argumenti causa, any credence to piece of reasoning so porous as the cyclical argument for immortality.
Was Socrates himself convinced by the combined arguments? We cannot know. But Simmias and Cebes still have doubts, and fear that what at most has been shown is that our soul had one or more previous lives, but with the possibility of its break-up and dispersal, like breath blown away in a gale, at the end of this one (77b, d-e). Socrates tries first to convince them that, between them, the cyclical argument and the argument for recollection prove a subsequent life as well as a previous one (77d), but Simmias and Cebes continue to express the need for reassurance, talking of themselves as a child within that fears obliteration (77e).
As I have just intimated, it is unclear whether Socrates had similar fears about the weaknesses of his two arguments. If he did not, he probably should have, since Simmias and Cebes were right to have qualms. If Socrates was right in saying that the two arguments in combination prove both pre- and post-existence for the soul, he was himself clearly assuming that the locus of the soul’s time before birth is exactly the same locus as the time after the soul leaves the body. But for his to have chance of being proved one needs evidence that persons such as Aunt Agatha and Great-Aunt Julia and Great-Great-aunt Penelope are, with tens of thousands of others awaiting re-incarnation, inhabitants of that same place. But for this evidence to emerge one needs proof, from highly personal and unique memories, that one conversed with such persons on matters uniquely tied to one’s previous acquaintance with them, and so on. And this as, we saw, any talk of seeing universal Forms comes nowhere near demonstrating.
Whether Socrates sensed this or not we do not know. But the qualms of Simmias and Cebes are enough to lead him on to further proofs of soul’s immortality, the first stemming directly from their fear that the soul might in fact be ‘dispersed’, like breath blown away by the wind. Known as the Argument from Affinity (78b4-84b8), it bases itself on the difference between the composite and the non-composite. If something is composite, it will invariably be subject to decomposition and dispersal of parts, in the way Simmias and Cebes have expressed fears that the soul may, after one incarnation, be subject to decomposition and dispersal of parts, and so be destroyed.
Using his newly minted doctrine of Transcendental Forms, Socrates sets out to show that the soul is much more like a Form that it is like a sense object. In his own words: ‘Soul is most similar to what is divine, intelligible, uniform, indissoluble, unvarying, and constant in relation to itself; whereas body, in its turn, is most similar to what is human, mortal, multiform, non-intelligible, dissoluble and never constant in relationship to itself’(80b1-8). Under questioning, Cebes agrees with Socrates’ comment that the latter description fits body, while soul ‘is completely indissoluble or something close to it (e engys ti toutou) (80b10).
Socrates then goes on to say a good deal about the virtuous life and the obstacles the body can put in the way of this, but this adds nothing new to what has been said already on the same topic, and we would probably do better to focus on that phrase ‘or something close to it’. This is remarkable and unremarkable all at once. It is unremarkable in that soul is only ever said in the argument to be very unlike a sense object in its attributes and very like a Form in its various tributes; it is not itself a Form. So itis not surprising to find Socrates saying it is very close to being indissoluble, but not absolutely so; only a Form is absolutely indissoluble. Or to put it in the terms in which Simmias and Cebes had expressed themselves, it is very close to being incomposite but it is not quite fully incomposite. But this is, of course, not good enough to calm their fears. Something that is almost incomposite is, alas, still composite, in the same way that a woman who is a little bit pregnant is pregnant. Tertium non datur.
Not that Socrates puts it quite that way, of course. But the chagrin of Socrates is very great, as he sees Simmias and Cebes huddled whispering together, trying to summon up ways of telling him that his arguments, including this one, have not satisfied them. And their instincts are sound, as we have seen, even if they have trouble voicing their concerns with the degree of specificity required. But now these objections finally find a voice, and emerge as what one might call the ‘Attunedness Objection’ and the ‘Last Coat Objection’. In the Attunedness Objection Simmias argues that what we call soul might be simply the attunedness (or state of adjustment, harmonia) of the parts that go to make up the body; it it not a substance. So when a well-tuned lyre gets destroyed, everything gets destroyed, both the physical stuff of the lyre and its attunedness. The idea of the attunedness surviving is absurd, in much the same way the idea of the smile of the Cheshire cat surviving the demise of the Cheshire cat is absurd (had Lewis Carroll just been reading the Phaedo?)
Not to be outdone, Cebes sets forth his Last Coat Objection. If the body is like a coat worn by the soul, the body we are now so to speak ‘wearing’ could well turn out to be like the coat a weaver is wearing when he dies. Little does he know it, but he is wearing his last coat, and will then be gone, leaving that coat behind him And we, if we did but know it, might well be likewise wearing our last body, and will then be gone, leaving it behind us.
The objections are acute. The first, from attunedness, is remarkably modern-sounding, and we shall return to the point later one, when we discuss a number of contemporary theories of mind. To it Socrates replies with a counter-argument of a complexity that has led to major disagreements among commentators (Gallop p. 158), but the general point being made is clear enough, and that is, that there can be degrees of attunedness, and there are no degrees of soul. A (human) soul is by definition a certain sort of thing – it rules the body (94b5), for example, and it can oppose the feelings of the body (94c1). In this all souls are equally soul, and no soul is more or less of a soul than another, whereas things like lyres can possess a greater or lesser degree of attunedness.
Dealing with the Last Coat Objection drives Socrates to draw upon much deeper resources, and this leads him to the famous final argument, from Entailment (epiphora). This is long and complex and justifiably famous, but its essence can be capture d fairly easily, and its strengths and weaknesses discussed with some degree of assurance. Drawing again on the theory of Forms, Socrates argues that certain Forms entail others. The Form Threeness, for example, entails oddness, and only oddness; evenness is excluded. Likewise the referents of Forms are subject to similar entailments; fire entails heat never cold, snow entails coldness never warmth, and so on. Putting it in somewhat different terms, no such thing can, says Socrates, while still being what it is, at the same time come to be, and be, its own opposite (102e9-103a2). So one can never have cold fire or hot snow. If a warm body is placed near snow, either the snow, as he puts it, ‘perishes or it gets out of the way’ (103d5-8). The point is phrased a little oddly, but Socrates’ argument is about whether the snow will remain snow or not; if the snow is to remain snow, it will need to be removed from the source of heat, otherwise it will simply disappear as snow.
Applying this argument to soul, Socrates argues that soul entails (literally, ‘brings up with it’) life. The opposite of life being death, soul can no more abide the presence of death than the uneven can admit its opposite, the uneven. It must, then, says Socrates, be immortal! (105e6).
Let us catch our breath a moment. When Socrates talked earlier about subjects not admitting attributes ‘opposite to’ one of their own essential attributes – snow. for example, not admitting heat – it was made clear that if the snow was to remain as snow, and not be reduced to water, it needed to get out of the way (presumably by being quickly transported away by somebody). By the same token, if the Form Threeness is to remain Threeness, it cannot become even, still less both even and odd.
What genuine inference, if any, does this allow us to draw about the relationship between life and soul? Not surely, that soul is immortal, but that there is no such thing as a dead soul; or, if a soul really is a soul, then it is alive; or, throughout the length of time a soul is a soul, then it is alive. All this upon the further, doubtful assumption, but one running throughout the dialogue, that soul, in addition to being the principle of life, is itself something that is alive.
Socrates apparently fails to see these - I would say very powerful - objections. But he certainly does not fail to see a further one, and that is, that in all his examples up to this point perishing is always a possibility: fire can perish and be superseded by snow, just as snow can perish, and be superseded by fire. So why cannot soul, in analogous fashion, be superseded by some death-bringing source, and thus itself die? (106b-c) It is a very natural objection, and Socrates does not wait for Simmias and Cebes to voice it. And in attempting to deal with it, he comes up with an argument of peculiar opaqueness, in which the immortal is claimed to be imperishable as well (in the sense, it turns out, of ‘indestructible’). It is an argument which has proved endlessly puzzling to commentators, and it is, I think, worth a look, even if we too finish up finally baffled by it.

Amidst all the strangeness of what is being said here, one phrase may turn out to be the one that has a chance of clarifying things, and that is the phrase ‘God and the Form of Life itself and anything else immortal’ (106d5-6). If soul really is more akin to a Form than to a sense object, as was claimed in the argument from Affinity, then the possibility of destruction is open to it in the way it is to sense objects. So, snow can survive or it can be destroyed in the presence or warmth; fire can survive or it can be destroyed in the presence of coldness. But a Form is indestructible by definition; the Form Fire, for example, is immune to attack, in the way fire in the grate is not. If this is true, and soul is closest of all things to being a Form, it too, will be, to repeat Socrates’ earlier words, ‘indestructible or very nearly so’. But this time the phrase ‘or very nearly so ‘is missing; soul is now claimed unequivocally to be absolutely indestructible.
What can be happening here? In an earlier argument, that from Affinity, we saw that Socrates was fully aware how far he could go, and unfortunately it wasn’t far enough; to be ‘very close to’ being indissoluble is to be, unfortunately, still dissoluble. Here, however, Socrates seems more confident he has a better argument at his disposal, and we must ask ourselves what it is. The heart of it seems to be the claim that ‘God, and the Form of Life itself, and anything else that is immortal are imperishable; hence soul too must be imperishable’. Further comment on the matter he does not offer, but, on the assumption that he is really talking about the ability to be ‘destroyed from without,’ so to speak, it must have seemed to him beyond any need for defense that immaterial substances like God and the Forms, all of them immortal, were also indestructible precisely because they were immaterial and therefore partless; only the material is destructible because only the material is divisible into parts.
Leaving us to fill in for ourselves the steps in the argument that I have just tried to spell out, Socrates goes on without further ado to state that soul is the exception to the rule about ‘retreating or perishing’; unlike snow or fire, soul will always retreat, never perish. Exactly why is not articulated, but we can, I think, assume, from earlier discussion, that he expects us to remember his argument that soul is like God and the Forms in being immaterial and partless because immortal; it is, as a consequence, immune from the physical attack of death (106e5) that would break it up and destroy it.
This is the best sense I myself can make of a puzzling argument, and I make no claims to have fathomed Socrates’ exact meaning. However, if my interpretation is at least on the right track, Socrates has not in this argument said anything about soul’s immortality that is any more convincing than he has said anywhere else on the matter up to this point in the dialogue. Even if, to allow him to state his case, we concede to Socrates that God and the Forms exist and are accurately describable as everlasting, immaterial, and non-composite, the arguments he has so far presented us with in the dialogue to suggest that such epithets can be ascribed to soul remain just as poorly attested now as they did then. If not, indeed, even more so; as we have seen, his earlier, disconcertingly frank admission that his arguments for soul’s indissolubility had at best proved its quasi-indissolubility is now even more disconcertingly abandoned, to the further detriment of an already weak case.
This turns out to be the final one of best set of arguments Socrates is credited by Plato with putting forward on the momentous occasion of his last discussion with his friends. Plato will return to the topic of what soul is, and whether it can be proved to be immortal, many more times over the next forty years of writing; and the whole question of immateriality and partlessness will be back too. For the moment, he seems content, in the Phaedo, to leave us with a lot of different notions of what soul, and more specifically what the human soul might be, with no attempt to reconcile them, and with several attempts at proving human soul’s immortality, none of them, as we have seen, convincing. The stage is set for some intellectual struggles on both points that will occupy a fair amount of his attention for the rest of his life.

À primeira vista, ainda estamos na atmosfera dos diálogos socráticos. A alma e o corpo são substâncias distintas, de tal forma que corpo e alma, se adicionados, aritmeticamente resultariam num resultado de dois, como no Górgias (464b30). É dito deles que podem existir 'sozinhos e sem companhia' quando separados. Mas enigmas aparecem imediatamente. Quanto devemos levar Sócrates a sério, se é que devemos mesmo levá-lo a sério, quando ele descreve a atividade de um genuíno filósofo como 'ficar o mais longe possível do corpo e dirigir sua atenção à alma' (64e4ff)? Se interpretarmos essa frase literalmente, temos não duas, mas três substâncias, o corpo, a alma, e o filósofo que as possui. Mas deve ele ser lida literalmente? Novamente, vamos atrasar a reposta até termos lido mais e visto a situação como um todo.
O que Sócrates tem a dizer, no contexto que acabo de advertir, sobre essa 'alma' a quem o filósofo genuíno deve devotar sua atenção? De seus vários comentários, parece claro que ele a vê como um tipo de pessoa interna, com todas as características de uma pessoa mas sem a fisicalidade. É dito da alma do filósofo que ela 'evita' e 'despreza' o corpo, e deve almejar ficar 'sozinha e sem companhia'(65d1-2). Diz-se que ela opera com razão, e por esse meio pretende alcançar a verdade (65b9-c2). Ela pode ser 'perturbada' por audição, visão, dor e prazer (65c5-7). À primeira vista, tudo isso poderia ter sido dito sobre o filósofo, ao invés de sua alma. E, de fato, como vimos, a passagem começou falando sobre o filósofo, e então desliza quase imperceptivelmente ao assunto da alma do filósofo. O que ele fala acerca da alma faz ela parecer uma pessoa interna. Mas ainda não está claro quão 'pessoal' essa pessoa interna deve ser. Na maioria das vezes, Sócrates parece estar destacando suas capacidades cognitivas, e em um momento, ele chega a se referir a ela como 'inteligência' (dianoia) (67c2-3), em um contexto em que o uso da palavra 'alma' seria esperado por qualquer leitor. Talvez devíamos, inicialmente, entender a psyche, de acordo com a maneira com que ela foi descrita até agora, como 'um princípio cognitivo com características aparentemente altamente pessoais'. Ao contrário de outras pessoas, ela não parece ter a característica da fisicalidade, apesar de poder ser influenciada pelo físico, normalmente para o seu detrimento.
A natureza dessa influência é explicitada na terminologia purificadora do Orfismo. O corpo, com suas dores, seus prazeres e desejos, é, no melhor dos casos, um incômodo (66a5-6, 66b7ff), e, no pior, um mal (66b6), e um filósofo deve gastar sua vida, até onde for possível, se 'purificando' de sua 'contaminação'. Ela é, quando encarnada, 'atada e cementada' dentro do corpo (82e2; cf. 92a1), que Sócrates descreve como sua 'prisão, de certa forma'(82e3) (mas veja n. 13, p25, TMR). Mas não é uma metáfora que Sócrates mantenha com qualquer afinco. Em outras ocasiões, ele fala de como a alma 'usa' o corpo (79c3), e ao fazê-lo 'opera pelos sentidos' (79c5), com o resultado de que é 'arrastada pelo corpo em direção a objetos nunca constantes, e ela mesma vaga em uma espécie de confusão tonta e bêbada'(79c6-8). As paixões e os prazeres do corpo 'poluem' e 'enfeitiçam' a alma (81b1ff), e ao dividir as crenças e felicidades do corpo, a alma acaba por adotar os hábitos do corpo (83d6-7). Agora, parece que há uma terceira pessoa em jogo: a pessoa que conhecemos, a alma dessa pessoa, e o seu corpo. O corpo, como acabamos de aprender, tem seus próprios prazeres e dores, suas próprias crenças (chamadas em outra ocasião de 'tolas e estúpidas'), pode ser 'ameaçado e repreendido', pode carregar a alma em várias direções pouco reputáveis e a corromper, e assim por diante.
Me deixe enfatizar que Sócrates está falando como se houvessem três 'pessoas' em questão; não estou defendendo que ele realmente acredite nisso, apenas que está falando como se acreditasse. Por enquanto. O problema será clarificado - de certa forma - quando ele discutir a imortalidade.
Vamos então, por enquanto, perseguir outros sentidos de alma que aparecem no diálogo, além de 'princípio cognitivo' e 'pessoa interna'. O primeiro desses é aquele antigo que vimos em Homero, da alma como força vital ou portadora da vida. Esse é o sentido que dirige o primeiro e o quarto argumentos a favor da imortalidade; alma como algo 'pessoal' (e ainda menos alma como pessoa) não entra na discussão.
O segundo desses sentidos pode ser encontrado no argumento da imortalidade por afinidade. Aqui a alma é creditada com um status ontológico de uma natureza intermediária entre objetos perceptíveis e Formas, mas muito mais próxima ao fim do espectro onde se encontram as formas do que ao fim em que se encontram os objetos perceptíveis. Ao ponto que a alma está muito mais perto de estar imóvel, como uma Forma, do que móvel, como um objeto perceptível. Essa noção de alma aparece de forma súbita, não havendo nenhuma referência a ela no pensamento grego anterior, e mesmo dentro do Fédon só é encontrada nesse argumento em específico.
Um terceiro sentido de alma é o que eu tenho chamado do sentido de 'ectoplasma' da alma. Aqui, a alma parece ser concebida como algum tipo de fluido vital que permeia o corpo, e que, ao se separar do corpo, mantém a forma do mesmo, especialmente se tiver sido 'contaminada' pelo corpo durante seu período de sua conjunção. Essa alma (que soa muito espacialista) pode, aparentemente, ser interpenetrada por toda a sua medida pelo corpo, e é o elemento corpóreo que ela 'arrasta' de toda uma vida dessa interpenetração que pode a fazer visível em cemitérios e casas assombradas - como fantasmas.
Eu mencionei esses três sentidos brevemente, só para deixar eles se apresentarem. Agora temos de olhar a maneira em que eles operam nos contextos em que aparecem. Enquanto o fazemos, teremos a oportunidade de nos engalfinharmos com os famosos argumentos em favor da imortalidade.
O primeiro é o chamado argumento cíclico, ou argumento de opostos (70c4-72e1), e ele diz o seguinte:

Como demonstram os argumentos por vir, Sócrates não está convencido que esse argumento sozinho seja suficiente para provar nossa imortalidade, mas ele não oferece razões por que. Sugeriremos algumas. A primeira é a ambiguidade do verbo gignesthai, que pode dizer 'virar tal-e-tal coisa', ou apenas 'começar a existir', 'nascer'. A segunda é a ambiguidade do que é um oposto: se frio pode legitimamente ser considerado o oposto de quente, no sentido de que eles podem ser vistos como variantes de um mesmo sujeito, está longe de estar claro que vivo e morto podem ser usados dessa mesma forma. Dizer que um ferro de passar roupa está quente, depois frio, depois quente de novo e depois frio de novo, e assim por diante, faz sentido imediato; enquanto dizer que o mesmo sujeito está vivo, depois morto, depois vivo de novo parece ir além do uso das palavras vivo e morto, e, no caso presente, tomando como dado o próprio ponto que precisa ser provado. A respeito do verbo gignesthai, Sócrates só pode argumentar se ele quizer que o verbo seja usado, seja em seu sentido de ‘virar tal e tal coisa’ ou em seu sentido de ‘nascer’. No primeiro caso, ele pode delimitar uma série de características ‘opostas’ que parecem caracterizar ciclicamente sujeitos variados, como os estados quente e frio de nosso ferro de passar, para então argumentar que as características vivo e morto operam da mesma forma no caso do sujeito da discussão, a alma, com o resultado muito pouco convincente que acaba de ser mencionado. No segundo caso, ele pode usar a palavra gignesthai em seu sentido de ‘nascer’, como em 70c8-d1, em que ele diz que ‘[nossas almas não poderiam nascer novamente, se elas já não existissem]’. Esse sentido é, efetivamente, o de ‘virar encarnado em um corpo’, e é descrito como tal algumas linhas depois do argumento cíclico ser encerrado (73a1-2).
Infelizmente, porém, esse argumento presume exatamente o ponto que deve ser provado; é preciso argumentação, e não apenas uma afirmação, para convencer um cético que o que nós chamamos de nascimento é a reincarnação de uma alma que já existia antes desse nascimento.
Em uma análise mais profunda, o que é problemático na argumentação como um todo é um grupo de suposições ainda mais perigosas. A primeira é a suposição que a alma não é apenas um princípio da vida, mas é ela mesma uma coisa viva. É, claro, uma suposição comum, como vimos, de Homero em diante, mas ela precisa ser examinada. Não é de forma alguma óbvio que o que faz algo viver e/ou mantém algo vivo é também um ser vivo, da mesma forma que não é obvio que a 'vermelhice' de uma maçã vermelha é também vermelha. A auto-predicação, no caso de palavras como ‘vida’, é tão problemática quanto no caso de palavras como ‘sagrado’ e ‘justo’.
Só o que Sócrates pode ter esperado demonstrar com seu argumento cíclico é que algum tipo de princípio da vida é necessário em todos os casos em que encontremos algo vivo, e não que um desses princípios – a alma humana – seja também vivo. E seu próximo passo, como veremos, sugere que ele estava ciente que sua proposição mais ampla era fraca.
Mas antes de explorarmos isso, é necessário ressaltar a suposição mais desconcertante de todas – e ela corre paralela à toda a argumentação a favor da imortalidade no diálogo – isso é, o fato que o termo ‘alma’ é, de fato, referencial. Apressarei-me em mencionar que a aceitação da referencialidade de termos gerais era basicamente universal até a era de Kant, então não deveria ser uma surpresa que Sócrates adere a ela. Mas, mesmo assim, a referencialidade se mantém um problema sério, deixando Sócrates apto a receber uma acusação de petitio principii, agrupando todas as outras acusações de raciocínio falacioso que já haviamos levantado.
Finalmente, é necessário dizer que Sócrates parece ter sido enganado significativamente, no argumento dos opostos, por uma ambiguidade aparentemente inócua nos verbos gregos com a preposição ana. Ele começa o argumento sugerindo que ‘estar acordado’ e ‘estar dormindo’ são opostos polares, bem como ‘estar vivo’ e ‘estar morto’. A sugestão é reforçada pela afirmação que entre cada polo existe um processo de duas mãos (genesis): no caso de estar dormindo ou acordado, o processo é dormir e acordar; no caso de estar vivo ou morto, ele é ‘morrer’ e ‘voltar a viver’(anabioskesthai). Mas o paralelismo aparente aqui é uma ilusão, já que frase ‘voltar à vida’ envolve no mínimo três estados (vida 1-morte-vida 2), enquanto ‘acordar’ envolve um mínimo de apenas 2. No caso de ‘acordar’ e ‘dormir’, Sócrates certamente está ciente que seus leitores irão supor (corretamente) que ele está falando sobre atividades correlatas de apenas uma substância viva. Por essa razão, ele não era obrigado a constatar o óbvio, falando ‘acordar novamente’; tendo em vista que apenas um sujeito era claramente o objeto da discussão, ‘acordar’ é uma descrição adequada de apenas um elemento no processo de duas mãos entre seus estados ‘opostos’ (e constantemente intercalados) de “estar dormindo” e “estar acordado”. Mas isso não funciona no caso de ‘morrer’ e ‘voltar à vida’, já que supor que essas também são atividades polares (e constantemente intercaladas) de um mesmo sujeito é, é claro, supor exatamente o ponto a ser provado.
Talvez Sócrates tenha percebido isso, já que ele vicia os dados em seu favor ao falar de ‘voltar à vida’. A frase é apresentada como paralela à ‘acordar’, mas é bastante claro que é completamente diferente. Isso pode ser visto claramente se abandonarmos a palavra ‘morrer’ e a substituirmos por frases como ‘deixar de existir’, ‘sair da existência’, ‘acabar a vida’. Os opostos polares viram, então ‘começar a existência’, ‘entrar em existência’ e ‘começar a vida’, ou algo assim, continuando com o problema da demonstração de que é a mesma substância que ‘deixa de existir’, ‘começa a existir’ etc. E isso não pode ser feito sem supor o ponto a ser provado.
Seria fácil acusar Sócrates de estar usando um truque de confiança, mas me parece mais caridoso falar que ele provavelmente foi encaminhado na direção errada por uma grande ambiguidade que caracteriza os verbos gregos que começam com o prefixo prepositivo ana-. O sentido preposicional primário ('cima') emerge em palavras como anistasthai (se levantar) e anageiresthai (acordar), mas um sentido secundário (de 'novamente' ou 'para trás') emerge em palavras como anapiptein (cair para trás), anametrein (medir novamente) e anabioskethai (voltar à vida). Gramaticalmente, o paralelismo é perfeito; linguisticamente, porém, uma mudança sutil, mas extremamente importante, ocorreu, e o que nos é apresentado é uma caso claro, se não intencional, de petitio principii.
Isso é um tanto desencorajador, mas provavelmente devíamos prosseguir, da mesma forma que prosseguem os participantes no diálogo, em busca de argumentos melhores. Como eu mencionei, Sócrates parece estar completamente ciente de que o argumento cíclico cabe mais com alma em geral, entendida como 'força de vida', do que especificamente com a alma humana, entendida como agente cognitiva com características pessoais. Agora, então, ele tentará combinar (77c6ff) o argumento de opostos com o argumento da anamnese, uma noção já discutida no Mênon. Infelizmente, porém, o que Sócrates sugere, tanto aqui quanto no Mênon, é que nós não relembramos de nada específico sobre as vidas passadas. Mas Simmias e Cebes ainda tem dúvidas, temendo que no máximo o que foi demonstrado é que nossa alma já teve uma ou mais vidas, mas, com a possibilidade de sua fragmentação e dispersão, como um sopro levado numa ventania, no fim dessa vida (77b, d-e). Primeiramente, Sócrates tenta convencê-los que, juntos, o argumento cíclico e o argumento do rememoramento provam a próxima vida tanto quanto uma vida passada (77d), mas Simmias e Cebes continuam expressando uma necessidade de uma garantia, falando deles mesmos como uma criança interna que teme a destruição(77e).
Como acabo de ressaltar, não está claro se Sócrates tinha temores similares em relação à fraqueza desses dois argumentos. Se ele não tinha, ele provavelmente deveria ter, já que Simmias e Cebes estavam certos em se sentirem desconfortáveis. Se Sócrates estava certo em sua afirmação que os dois argumentos juntos provam tanto uma pré quanto pós existência para a alma, ele está claramente assumindo que a localização da alma antes do nascimento é exatamente o mesmo do que depois da alma deixar o corpo. Para essa evidência surgir, porém, precisamos de provas, de memórias altamente pessoais e únicas, que você tenha conversado com essas pessoas sobre coisas unicamente relacionadas à sua ligação prévia com essa mesma pessoa, e assim por diante. E isso, como vimos, não chega perto de ser demonstrado por discursos sobre Formas universais.
Se Sócrates sentia isso ou não, não temos como saber. Mas a dúvida de Simmias e Cebes são o bastante para levar ele a mais provas da imortalidade da alma, a primeira diretamente derivada de que a alma poderia ser ‘dispersa’, como um sopro levado por uma ventania. Conhecido como Argumento da Afinidade (78b4-84b8), ele se baseia na diferença entre o composto e o não-composto. Se algo é composto, será invariavelmente sujeito a decomposição e dispersão de suas partes, da mesma forma que Simmias e Cebes temem que a alma possa, depois de uma encarnação, se sujeitar a um processo de decomposição e dispersão de suas partes, sendo, então, destruída.

Então não é surpreendente que Sócrates ache que a alma está muito perto de ser indissolúvel, mas não absolutamente; apenas a Forma é absolutamente indissolúvel. Ou, para usar os termos em que Simmias e Cebes se expressaram, ela está muito próxima de ser incomposta, mas não é completamente incomposta. Na Objeção da Afinação, Simmias argumenta que e o que chamamos de alma pode simplesmente ser a afinação (ou estado de ajuste, harmonia) das partes que compõem o corpo; ela não é uma substância. Quando uma lira bem afinada é destruída, tudo é destruído, tanto as suas partes físicas quanto sua afinação. A idéia da afinação sobreviver é absurda, da mesma forma em que a idéia do sorriso do Gato de Cheshire sobreviver a morte do gato é absurda (será que Lewis Carroll estava lendo o Fédon?)
Sem querer ficar pra trás, Cebes elabora sua Objeção do Último Casaco. Se o corpo é como um casaco vestido pela alma, o corpo que estamos 'vestindo' agora pode muito bem ser algo como o casaco que um tecelão vestia quando morreu. Mal sabe ele que aquele será o último casaco que usará, e logo ele deixará esse casaco pra trás. E nós, também sem saber, podemos também estar vestindo nosso último corpo, e depois vamos desaparecer, deixando nosso corpo para trás.
As objeções são afiadas. A primeira, da Afinação, parece notavelmente moderna, e vamos retornar a esse ponto depois, quando discutirmos um número de Teorias da Mente contemporâneas. Sócrates responde com um contra-argumento de uma complexidade que tem levado a grandes divergências entre os comentadores (Gallop p.158), mas o cerne geral é claro o bastante: existem graus de afinação, e não existem graus de alma. Uma alma (humana) é, por definição, um certo tipo de coisa - ela reina sobre o corpo (94b5), por exemplo, e pode opor os sentimentos do corpo (94c1). Nesse sentido, todas as almas são igualmente alma, e nenhuma alma é mais ou menos alma que as outras, enquanto coisas como liras podem possuir um grau maior ou menor de afinação.
Para lidar com a Objeção do Último Casaco, Sócrates se utiliza de recursos muito mais profundos, e isso leva ele ao famoso último argumento do diálogo, o Argumento da Dedução (epiphora). Ele é longo e complexo e justificadamente famoso, mas a sua essência pode ser capturada de forma razoavelmente simples, e suas forças e fraquezas discutidas com um bom grau de confiança. Se utilizando novamente da teoria das Formas, Sócrates argumenta que certas Formas levam a outras. A Forma do Três, por exemplo, leva ao impar, e apenas ao impar; o par está excluído. Quando Sócrates falou que nada pode admitir atributos 'opostos' aos seus atributos essenciais - como a neve, por exemplo, não admite o calor - fica claro que para a neve permanecer como neve, e não virar água, é necessário que ela 'saia do caminho' (presumivelmente por meio de alguém que a leve para longe). Da mesma forma, para a Forma do Três permanecer como Três, ela não pode se tornar par, e muito menos par e impar ao mesmo tempo.
A partir disso, que dedução genuína podemos tirar, se é que podemos tirar alguma, sobre a relação entre a vida e a alma? Não que a alma é imortal, mas sim que não existem almas mortas; ou, se a alma realmente é alma, então ela é viva; ou, durante o tempo em que a alma é alma, então ela tem que ser viva. Tudo isso em cima da suposição (duvidável, mas presente em todo o diálogo) que a alma, além de ser o princípio da vida, é também algo vivo.
Sócrates aparentemente não consegue aceitar essas objeções - na minha opinião muito poderosas. Mas ele certamente consegue perceber uma outra, essa é, que em todos os seus exemplos até agora, o perecimento sempre permaneceu uma possibilidade: o fogo pode perecer, e ser substituído por neve, bem como a neve pode perecer e ser substituída pelo fogo. Então porque a alma não poderia, de forma análoga, ser substituída por alguma fonte de morte, e então morrer? (106b-c). É uma objeção bastante natural, e Sócrates não espera para que Simmias e Cebes a dêem voz. E ao tentar lidar com ela, ele cria um argumento particularmente opaco, em que o que é imortal é tido também como imperecível (no sentido de indestrutível). É um argumento que já provou ser infindavelmente confuso aos comentadores, e merece, eu acho, uma olhada, mesmo que acabemos perplexos.

No meio de toda a estranheza do que está sendo dito aqui, uma frase pode vir a ser a chave para clarificarmos as coisas, e essa frase é 'Deus e a Forma de Vida, e tudo mais que é Imortal'(106d5-6). Se a alma realmente é mais próxima da Forma do que a um objeto sensível, como foi afirmado no Argumento da Afinidade, então a possibilidade da destruição é aberta a ela da mesma forma que é pra objetos sensíveis. Então, a neve pode sobreviver ou ser destruída sob a presença de calor: fogo pode sobreviver ou ser destruído pelo frio. Mas uma Forma é, por definição, indestrutível: a Forma Fogo, por exemplo, é imune a ataques, enquanto um fogo na grelha não. Se isso é verdade, e a alma é o que há de mais próximo de uma Forma, ela também será, repetindo as palavras de Sócrates, 'indestrutível, ou quase isso'. Mas dessa vez a frase 'ou quase isso' está faltando; a alma agora é tida como definitivamente e absolutamente indestrutível.
O que pode estar acontecendo aqui? Esse é o melhor sentido que eu consigo perceber em um argumento enigmático, e eu não afirmo ter compreendido o sentido exato desse discurso de Sócrates. Porém, se minha interpretação está pelo menos seguindo o caminho certo, nesse argumento Sócrates não falou nada sobre a imortalidade da alma que fosse mais convincente que em qualquer outro momento no diálogo. Mesmo se, para deixar que ele faça seu ponto, nós concedamos a Sócrates que Deus e as Formas existem e são descritas de forma precisa como eternas, imateriais e não-compostas, os argumentos que ele apresentou no diálogo para sugerir que tais epítetos podem ser aplicados a alma permanecem tão mal atestados agora quanto antes. Se não, de fato, ainda menos comprovados: como vimos, sua aceitação prévia e desconcertante que seus argumentos para a indissolubilidade da alma teria provado, no melhor caso, a sua quase indissolubilidade é agora, mais desconcertantemente ainda, abandonada, degradando ainda mais um caso bastante fraco.
Esse parece ser o último de uma série de argumentos que Platão credita a Sócrates na importante ocasião de sua última discussão com os amigos. Platão voltará ao tópico do que é a alma, e se é possível provar sua imortalidade, muitas vezes ao longo dos próximos quarenta anos como escritor; e toda a questão de imaterialidade e divisão em partes também voltará. Por enquanto, ele parece contente, no Fédon, em nos deixar com várias noções diferentes do que a alma, e mais especificamente a alma humana, pode ser, sem uma tentativa de reconciliá-las, e com algumas tentativas de provar a imortalidade da alma humana, nenhuma das quais é muito convincente. O palco está armado para os conflitos intelectuais em torno de dois pontos que ocuparão um bom tanto de sua atenção pelo resto de sua vida.

Amazônia detém 80% dos manguezais brasileiros. Ponte entre ambientes terrestres e marinhos, formações guardam estoques de gases-estufa, abrigam espécies únicas e mantêm populações humanas, mas estão ameaçadas.
Menos lembrados diante da floresta, os manguezais da Amazônia cobrem 11,2 mil quilômetros quadrados no Amapá, Pará e Maranhão. A área equivale à de oito cidades como São Paulo e soma 80% dos mangues do país, cuja faixa alcança o município de Laguna, em Santa Catarina. Dali ao Rio Grande do Sul, essas formações têm características naturais diferentes e são chamadas de marismas.
Só no Pará, há mangues abrigados nas reservas extrativistas Mãe Grande de Curuçá, São João da Ponta, Caeté-Taperaçu, Tracuateua, Araí Peroba, Gurupi-Piriá, Chocoaré-Mato Grosso e Soure, além das reservas extrativistas marinhas de Mocapajuba, Mestre Lucindo e Cuinarana.

Presentes do litoral até quilômetros adentrando rios de água salobra, os mangues são uma ponte natural entre ambientes terrestres e marinhos, onde a vida flui no sobe e desce das marés. O emaranhado de troncos e raízes dominado por seis tipos de árvores abriga inúmeros animais, inclusive ameaçados de extinção, como crias do gigante mero e o caranguejo-uçá.
Essas formações também funcionam como “filtros”, ajudando a reter poluentes químicos, plásticos, garrafas e outros resíduos que encontrariam o mar trazidos por rios e córregos. Também reduzem as erosões no litoral, contendo o impacto das ondas durante tempestades e “ressacas”.
“Uma das maiores áreas mundiais preservadas de mangue está no Brasil. Mais de 80% dos mangues amazônicos estão em unidades de conservação. Mas a proteção legal não basta, ela precisa funcionar e depende de muitos setores”, destacou Marcus Fernandes, coordenador do Laboratório de Ecologia de Manguezal da Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), ao Programa Vozes Amazônicas.
Mesmo com grande área abrigada em unidades de conservação, estudos da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ), da Universidade de São Paulo (USP), apontam que os mangues sofrem com desmate, crescimento urbano e industrial, poluição por esgotos e químicos levada por rios, criação de camarões e pesca descontrolada. Estradas e outras obras também os atropelam, como a PA-458, entre as cidades paraenses Bragança e Ajuruteua. Esses prejuízos afetam inclusive populações extrativistas.
“Em termos socioeconômicos, os manguezais são fonte de renda para pescadores e catadores de caranguejos e, consequentemente, são responsáveis por manter o comércio de pequenas cidades. Além disso, estão associados à tradição e a culturas de muitos vilarejos, com lendas e histórias envolvendo os manguezais”, destacou Danilo Romero, do Departamento de Ciências do Solo da ESALQ/USP.
Segundo o cientista Marcus Fernandes, a construção de “currais de pesca” é um dos impactos que já compromete a recuperação de mangues em regiões da Amazônia. A técnica artesanal captura peixes em labirintos erguidos com palha e madeira dos mangues. A procura por “frutos do mar” cresce junto ao aumento da população e de economias na zona costeira.
“A construção de currais não está permitindo a recuperação do mangue. O processo está passando do artesanal para o industrial. Pessoas já migram entre estados e municípios atrás de recursos esgotados em suas regiões. É preciso planejar e garantir um uso sustentável dos manguezais”, ressaltou Fernandes, doutor em Biologia pela Universidade de York (Inglaterra).
A função climática dos mangues
Um estudo publicado na revista Biology Letters por Romero (ESALQ/USP) e outros pesquisadores brasileiros e dos Estados Unidos revelou que os mangues guardam duas vezes mais carbono (CO2) por hectare do que a floresta. A conclusão veio após medições em 12 manguezais e restingas na Amazônia. O segredo está no solo alagado pela água do mar.
“Quando morre ou é cortada, a vegetação de áreas secas libera na atmosfera o carbono que absorveu ao crescer. No mangue, as plantas que morrem são incorporadas ao solo e há menos oxigênio para sua decomposição pelos alagamentos constantes. Assim, o gás que seria liberado em poucos anos fica retido por décadas”, descreveu Romero ao InfoAmazonia e ao PlenaMata.

Mangues são parte das áreas úmidas ou alagáveis na Amazônia, formações que estocam e emitem metano (CH4), um gás que prejudica o clima global 20 vezes mais do que o carbono. Uma pesquisa publicada na revista Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society descobriu que árvores amazônicas emitem metano tanto nas cheias quanto nas estiagens regionais.
“A emissão de metano ocorre naturalmente durante a decomposição de material orgânico. Vimos que grande parte dos lançamentos desse gás na Amazônia vêm de áreas alagáveis, que somam 16% da floresta”, disse Viviane Figueiredo, da Unidade de Análises Ambientais da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) e uma das autoras do estudo.
As emissões de metano estão associadas à pecuária, ao uso de fertilizantes, queima de vegetação e poluição industrial. O lançamento natural do gás na Amazônia pede medidas mais duras contra o desmatamento e pode aumentar o montante das emissões brasileiras, pois ainda não é contabilizado. O InfoAmazonia mostrou que a degradação florestal também não consta nos cálculos nacionais de gases-estufa.
“Isso não significa que as árvores prejudicam o clima e devem ser cortadas. Na prática, elas armazenam mais carbono do que emitem metano”, destacou Viviane Figueiredo (UFRJ), pós-doutora em Geociências e Biotecnologia. “A descoberta de novas fontes naturais de gases-estufa permite que tomadores de decisões ajustem metas nacionais para cortar emissões e as ações para controlar o desmatamento e as queimadas”, completou a cientista.
Os manguezais somam apenas 0,6% das florestas tropicais do mundo, mas seu desmatamento responde por até 12% das emissões de gases-estufa oriundas do desmatamento nessas regiões. Por isso, cortar e causar outros impactos em mangues é um mau negócio no Brasil e outros países amazônicos.
No Equador, a maior área global de mangues perde espaço para a criação de camarões. A Colômbia viu metade de seus mangues desaparecer nas últimas três décadas. Áreas menores no Peru recebem turistas e estão relativamente conservadas dentro de unidades de conservação.
“Mudanças climáticas e no uso do solo para agropecuária, carcinicultura (criação de camarões em viveiros) ou obras ameaçam o futuro dos mangues e aumentam significativamente as emissões de gases estufa na atmosfera”, completou Marcus Fernandes, coordenador do Laboratório de Ecologia de Manguezal da UFPA.

Há outro agravante: o metano é um gás de efeito estufa 28 vezes mais potente que o CO2 no longo prazo e até 80 vezes no curto prazo. S
Mas por que isso importa? O metano é um dos principais gases de efeito estufa. Os modelos de medição do gás normalmente presumem que, nos pântanos, ele só é produzido quando o solo está completamente inundado e submerso.
Por isso, os resultados do estudo podem ajudar a melhorar os modelos de quantificação do gás, que poderiam estar subestimando o papel das emissões de CH4 para além das terras inundadas em ecossistemas como a bacina amazônica mundo afora.
Trata-se de um processo natural. E isso não significa que as árvores são ruins para o clima e deveriam ser cortadas. Na verdade, na maioria dos casos, estima-se que sua capacidade de armazenamento de carbono supera facilmente suas emissões de metano.

In Pará alone, there are mangroves sheltered in the Mãe Grande de Curuçá, São João da Ponta, Caeté-Taperaçu, Tracuateua, Araí Peroba, Gurupi-Piriá, Chocoaré-Mato Grosso and Soure extractive reserves, in addition to theMocapajuba, Mestre Lucindo and Cuinarana marine extractive reserves.

Spreading from the coast kilometers inland through brackish water rivers, mangroves are a natural bridge between terrestrial and marine environments, where life flows in the rise and fall of the tides. The tangle of trunks and roots dominated by six types of trees is home to countless animals, including some threatened with extinction, such as the giant grouper spawn and the uçá crab.
They also function as “filters”, retaining chemical pollutants, plastics, bottles and other waste brought by rivers and streams from the sea . They also reduce coastal erosion by containing the impact of waves during storms and “surges”.
“One of the world's largest preserved mangrove areas is in Brazil. Over 80% of the Amazonian mangroves are in conservation units. But legal protection is not enough, it needs to be enforced, which depends on many sectors,” highlighted Marcus Fernandes, coordinator of the Mangrove Ecology Laboratory at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). to the Vozes Amazônicas project.
Even with a large area sheltered in conservation units, studies by the Luiz de Queiroz School of Agriculture (ESALQ), at the University of São Paulo (USP), indicate that mangroves suffer from deforestation, urban and industrial growth, sewage and chemical pollution carried by rivers, shrimp farming, and uncontrolled fishing. Highways and other infrastructure projects, such as Highway PA-458, connecting the cities of Bragança and Ajuruteua in Pará, also impact them. These losses even affect populations involved with extractive activities.
“In socioeconomic terms, mangroves are a source of income for fishermen and crab collectors and are therefore responsible for sustaining commerce of some small towns. Furthermore, they are associated with the tradition and cultures of many villages, with legends and stories involving mangroves”, highlighted Danilo Romero, from the Department of Soil Sciences at ESALQ/USP.
According to scientist Marcus Fernandes, the construction of “fishing corrals” is one of the impactful activities that has already compromised the recovery of mangroves in some regions of the Amazon. This artisanal technique captures fish in labyrinths built with straw and wood from the mangroves. The demand for “seafood” grows along with the increase in population and economies in the coastal zone.
“The construction of corrals is not allowing the mangrove to recover. The process is transforming from artisanal to industrial. People already migrate between states and municipalities looking for resources that have already been depleted in their regions. We need to plan and guarantee the sustainable use of mangroves,” said Fernandes, a Biology PhD at the University of York (England).
The climatic function of mangroves
A study published in the journal Biology Letters by Romero (ESALQ/USP) and other Brazilian and US researchers revealed that mangroves store twice as much carbon (CO2) per hectare as the forest. The conclusion came after measurements in 12 mangroves and sandbanks in the Amazon. The secret lies in the soil, flooded by sea water.
“When it dies or is cut down, vegetation in dry areas releases the carbon it absorbed as it grew into the atmosphere. In the mangrove, the plants that die are incorporated into the soil and there is less oxygen for their decomposition due to the constant flooding. Thus, the gas that would be released in a few years is retained for decades,” described Romero in an interview to InfoAmazonia and PlenaMata.

Mangroves are part of the wetlands and floodplains of the Amazon, natural formations that store and emit methane (CH4), a gas that is four times as harmful to the climate as carbon .Research published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society found that Amazonian trees emit methane in both floods and regional droughts.
“Methane emissions occur naturally during the decomposition of organic material. We saw that most of the methane released in the Amazon comes from flooded areas, which account for 16% of the forest,” said Viviane Figueiredo, a researcher at the Environmental Analysis Unit at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and one of the authors of the study.
Methane emissions are associated with livestock, the use of fertilizers, burning of vegetation, and industrial pollution. The natural release of gas in the Amazon calls for tougher measures against deforestation and may increase the amount of Brazilian emissions, as it is not yet accounted for. InfoAmazonia has shown that forest degradation is also not included in national greenhouse gas calculations .
“This does not mean that trees harm the climate and should be cut down. In practice, they store more carbon than they emit methane,” highlighted Viviane Figueiredo, a postdoctoral fellow in Geosciences and Biotechnology at the UFRJ. “The discovery of new natural sources of greenhouse gases allows decision-makers to adjust national targets to cut emissions and actions to control deforestation and fires”, added the scientist.
Mangroves account for only 0.6% of the world's tropical forests, but their deforestation accounts for up to 12% of greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation in these regions. Therefore, clearing or damaging mangroves is bad business in Brazil and other Amazonian countries.
In Ecuador, the largest global area of mangroves has been losing space to shrimp farming. Colombia has seen half of its mangroves disappear over the last three decades. Smaller areas in Peru receive tourists and are relatively conserved within protected areas.
“Climate changes and changes in land use for agriculture, shrimp farming (shrimp farming in ponds) or infrastructure projects threaten the future of mangroves and significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere,” added Marcus Fernandes, coordinator of the Mangrove Ecology Laboratory at the UFPA
