Hi everybody,

I am studying literary translation via calamo y cran, an education and translation organization based in Spain, as I already work on the literary field (novels), but I am eager to specialise even more. Now: would you suggest to attend a course at a local editing academy? (the website is in Italian)

My question is due to how exactly may a editing course fit into my translation's projects

Hi Federica. I wouldn't expect single classes to be a big differentiator for clients that hire literary translators. Maybe literary translators could comment on that. But if your objective is to get better, and the course is good, do it. (There are also many online options these days.) Being good does matter.

That is not a single course, and it is not online:it is held by the University of Catania, in Italy my doubt actually was if this could fit into literary translation or it goes a bit out of the field.

why Jun 20, 2018

I think that literary translation is one of the most difficult yet a low-paid job, because it requires very broad and deep related skills and knowledge whereas there's very little help from colleagues, CATs, glossaries, and the rest. At least, I would not consider literary translation as a principal earner, let alone for beginners. Perhaps, hourly earnings seem ok, yet a rare contract and royalties for each sold book is the best option--for awhile.

Of course, a decent lexically competent editor is always a must, but one also should a good linguist, a good specialist, and--the most important!--a sensible businessman.

If one can communicate and deal with people as equals, then a portion of common sense and sensible skepticism should do. On the other hand, working with people (as an interpreter) is more profitable than working with paper--in all ways.

Cheers

My 3 cents Jun 21, 2018

I had a look at their website and it seems like a good complement to your literary studies. It will not hurt you to know things from the inside out and what is more they offer traineeships in some Italian publishing houses, what could be extremely useful for someone who is starting out in literary translation…

Good luck!

Thank you Teresa,

I was actually in need of somebody telling me to go ahead, and your words were perfect Thank you again, this will push me even more in diving even deeper into the literary word
I am a translator since 2013, not a newbie anymore; I was "born" as a medical and business translator, and this idea of mine of widening my areas of expertise took place just a couple of years ago, when I decided to start writing by myself, while translating a book for a contest held by an Italian publisher. I hope everything will be fine
