Interesting situation ... May 8, 2018

The general consensus seems to be that "nativeness" on its own / in itself is not much of a predictor regarding the quality of the translation, but still "nativeness" is a recurring topic, one guaranteed to generate a "lively" debate! (who said the translation business is boring?)

Why? because clients [ones that care about it] are often NOT in position to know/evaluate if the translation they are paying for is worth anything, especially when when it's a translation in a language they don't understand, so they start clutching at straws like a seemingly sensible criteria that the translator MUST be translating into his/her "native" language.

The way I see it, a bit (in fact a lot) of "client education" is what is missing.

A thought about the current way of "nativeness" verification May 8, 2018

Some non-native translators are much better at "reading aloud" than their non-native peers, and the former can pass the verification much more easily.
