See more Hello lovely people, I am completely new to the world of online translation and was wondering if I could pick your brains a bit. I have a degree in Languages, specialising in Spanish and German. I lived in Mexico for 11 years and am half Italian and half English so I speak Spanish, Italian and English fluently. I am looking to do the CIOL DipTrans exam in January 2021 from Spanish to English but would prefer to prepare before I attempt it. I have investigated the following institutions (recognised by CIOL) and have chosen no.1 because it seems to be a more flexible course with regards to when and how much I study; however, I have not been able to find any non-biased reviews online about it. Does anyone know if this is the correct choice before I splurge on it? Does anyone have any input on the other courses? 1. Linguist Training.com (https://www.linguisttraining.com/allcourses/diptransfull) 2. London Metropolitan University 3. Language Academy 4. University of Westminster 5. Middlesex University I cannot afford a full year of University and would rather do an online course, especially because I would like to start immediately and of course due to Covid-19 we have no idea when we can get back to actual classes. Thank you very much for your help and support! Vanessa ▲ Collapse | | | Gethin Sugar United Kingdom Local time: 17:17 Member (2020) English to Welsh + ... CIOL Membership | Jun 1, 2020 |
While I can't help with feedback on any particular courses, I just wanted to make sure you are aware of the examination resources that the CIOL provides to its members. Having not used the resources myself, I can't comment on their quality or usefulness. However, I understand that all DipTrans candidates are required to hold at least IoLET Affiliate membership and this grants you access to the resources. Hopefully they will be of some use and complement any training courses you attend. ... Dear Vanessa, Ten years ago, I learned a great deal from the first of their two online advanced level Spanish classes that prepare students for the CIOL. (They also have them in other languages.) The assignments followed up on readings and were very challenging and time consuming. A professor carefully and helpfully corrected my work every time. See more Dear Vanessa, Ten years ago, I learned a great deal from the first of their two online advanced level Spanish classes that prepare students for the CIOL. (They also have them in other languages.) The assignments followed up on readings and were very challenging and time consuming. A professor carefully and helpfully corrected my work every time. The only thing I didn't like about it was the lack of communication with other students, even though there were several others taking that same course at that same time. I would like to have seen how they chose to translate the same passages and had some discussion. Of course, this may be different now. Unfortunately, I didn't take the second half, offered as an immediate run-up to taking the exam, because: a) at the time it appeared that finding a site where I could take the CIOL here in the U.S. was next to impossible, and b) my translation business had already taken off and I would have been too busy to do the many assignments. Thank you very much for your input! I have recently gone ahead and tried the course, which so far is quite good. With regards to the CIOL resourses, Gethin, thank you very much for that input. It had not occurred to me, as I am a complete newbie in this field. I have heard that the exam is quite difficult to pass so any extra preparation is of course entirely welcome!
