Hi,

I was wondering what the usual price for audio translation from arabic into english is? And do you usually charge for transcription first, then for translation or how do you go about charging for your work?

Thanks

Chris

How you actually present the price is up to you: per audio minute for transcription + per word for translation is normal, though of course you won't know how many words there are until you've done the transcription. Or you can just give a total figure based on an estimate from listening to the audio. Do make sure you listen to a good number of excerpts before you quote for the job. If the audio is too bad then it simply may not be possible to come up with a full transcription.

If the client doesn't need to see the transcript then you can save yourself a bit of time and them a bit of money by not having to make it too tidy. As long as you can understand what you've written (typos and all) that's good enough. If they need it then you'll have to carefully proofread it, etc. But never be tempted to let the client persuade you that you can just listen in one language and type in another. The result may be good enough for an oral interpretation but it won't withstand the test of being read and studied in depth.
