Does anyone know how to select all text that has a background of a different color? I have a Word document that has only certain parts that are highlighted in red and I would like to select only those parts in order to do a Word Count on them.

Can anyone explain how I can count these different-colored parts of my document?

Do the following: Jan 29, 2007

Go the the search function in Word ->advanced ->format ->hightlighted. Don't write any text in the search box.

Excuse me, I don't have a Word in english, but that should do it.

Hi Jan 29, 2007

Go to Edit > Find. Press the “More” button, Than Press the “Format” button and select “Font”. Select the desired font color and hit “OK”. Check the “Highlight all items found in:” checkbox, and hit “Find All”. Don’t type anything in the “Find what” field.

====================

Sorry, I thoght the font was a different color. Yes, like Christel and Gerard wrote, you have to select “Highlight”, instead of “Font”.

Or the following Jan 29, 2007

In a copy of the Word document:

Push Ctrl+H and click on Format, then click on Highlight.
The Format for the Find what field will be Highlight.
Click on Format, then click on Highlight again.
The Format for the Find what field will be Not Highlight.
Leave the Find what field and the Replace with field empty.
Click on Replace All.
All highlighted text will be preserved and can be counted.

Regards,
Gerard

Huh? Jan 29, 2007

Maybe I'm just thick, but I tried all these suggestions and none of them worked. Can anyone explain it more clearly or offer another suggestion?

thanks!

If you have an MS Word document, where some part of the text has specific formatting, you can select only that part of the text and do any operation with it, including word-count. In Edward’s case some part of the text is highlighted in red color. To select only that part of the text you have to do the following:

1. In MS Word menu go to Edit > Find (or hit Ctrl + F);
2. In the dialog box that opens, press the “More” button;
3. The dialog box will expand, and at the bottom you’ll see some buttons, press the “Format” button;
4. In the menu that pops up select “Highlight”;
5. You’ll see that below the “Find what” filed the word “Highlight” appears;
6. Then check the “Highlight all items found in:” checkbox;
7. Finally press the “Find All” button.

This is one of the methods to do this, along with the one suggested by Gerard, and another method that you can do with the help of Format > Styles and Formatting.

I hope this helps.

Henry

Thanks Henry. Never noticed this checkbox!!!

Those who are using the other method (Find/replace) should do this on a copy of original document. The method will delete all the unwanted text if you saved it.

Anil
