I'd like to know how translators make back-ups of their documents. Up to now, I have been using CDs, but I would like to find a better method of making back-ups (weekly). Has anyone tried uploading their docs on an ftp server? how secure is this? | | | Memory sticks | Jun 26, 2006 |
In my experience CDs are very unreliable. Memory sticks seem oK | | | Backup software & external HDD | Jun 26, 2006 |
Hello Eva, There are many ways to make backups of your work. One method I have been using for a while is simply a backup software (e.g. Norton Ghost) combined with external harddrives which now can be bought at quite an affordable price. You can simply define what (which HDD in your computer, directories etc.) should be backuped when, e.g. Monday-Friday at 6 pm. You just need to set up the timetable and the software makes the rest. Hope this helps... See more Hello Eva, There are many ways to make backups of your work. Same thing here. I have a 250GB external drive in which all my backups are kept. Besides the obvious (work files), from time to time I also do an iso image of my primary hard drive (C), backups of my mail and addresses, Favorites, and so on. I know it sounds a little too busy but once you lose a CPU, you'll want to have all those things. As for software, I'd recommend something that would allow you to perform the backup automatically. The less you have to think about it... See more Same thing here. I have a 250GB external drive in which all my backups are kept. Hi everyone, In my experience I use them all but without any special backup programm. The main clue -to me- is , I pu all my documents in D instead oc C. I had a trojan lately and had to set windows once more. In this case everything was gone but those on D. May be this would be also helpfull. Have a sunny day, Sebla | | | Is one backup enough? | Jun 27, 2006 |
Personally I don't think it is, not when I think of all I would lose in terms of glossaries, translation memory etc. if the data were lost. I keep an external hard drive attached to the computer which backs up all my documents every evening. But in view of the possibility (remote but not impossible) that a major virus could wipe out both the computer and the external HDD, the house could burn down or a burglar could vandalise all the equipment in sight, I also keep a second external... But in view of the possibility (remote but not impossible) that a major virus could wipe out both the computer and the external HDD, the house could burn down or a burglar could vandalise all the equipment in sight, I also keep a second external hard drive which I back up documents onto as often as I remember and keep in a secure safe. In theory one ought not to keep one's external hard drive connected to the computer (on account of the risk of something nasty infecting the data), but I find it too much hassle to plug it in every day for the backup, so it stays on all the time and the second external hard drive provides the additional reassurance. ▲ Collapse | | | eva75 English + ... Sorry, but from my point of view I could as well publish my data in the next newspaper. I was offered a very professional backup-soultion and we could participate in this project at almost no cost - as the provider wanted to get references. But I opted against. The data was not backed up here, but should be backed up on the provider´s system. After consulting some other colleagues I opted against, as we have sensitive data and I do not want to ask my customers for a permission to transfer such data to a backup machine somwhere... This can be realy a challange in a case something happens. For such case be sure you have a goooood insurance. And once again, this was a specialised company with protected servers. I don´t know how good GSpace is protected. This is Google and they do that for free - what kind of security can you expect then? Just my two cents Regards Jerzy ▲ Collapse | | | eva75 English + ... Sorry, but from my point of view I could as well publish my data in the next newspaper. Well, if that's the case, our emails are not confidential either! Like your email account or indeed for an FTP server, you have a personal password. Personally, I can't see the danger If you are so concerned about the privacy of your personal data, I'd be interested to know how you get your translation jobs delivered to you and how you deliver them? I presume email is out of the question, since according to you such methods are not secure (GSpace sends your documents to your email account). | | | Jerzy Czopik Germany Local time: 07:11 Member (2003) Polish to German + ... But this does not mean the data is secure. I agree, that all I written previously may sound paranoid, but it isn´t! While sending per email will - if - disclose only part of the data, putting the data somwhere in Internet can possibly disclose them all. For most customers. I also use FTP - and I think we do not differ here much. Our customers do also use e-mail. But it makes a difference if I send a part of a project per e-mail or put my whole data on a server accessible somwhere in the Internet, at least it makes a difference for me.
