I have some CDs which play smoothly on CD player but don't play properly on my computer which has combo (CD+DVD). Some of these CDs don't even open on the computer whereas some of them play for a while and then suddenly stop and Windows Media Player shows a message that there is an error.

What is the possible reason of this problem and how can I fix the same?

Copy protection? May 3, 2006

Hi Sanjiv,
I assume you're referring to audio CDs? This sounds like copy-protection - check the CD booklet.

Best regards,
Ralf

Reverse May 3, 2006

This seems to be the reverse of the problem reported at:

www.proz.com/topic/44039

The link there may however still be of use.

Hi Sanjiv,

In case it's not a copy protection issue:

WMP is not know to be the most generous and forgiving software.
Try other third party players, there are lots of them at download.com.
Winamp and iTunes can also be used, with the advantage of ripping MP3 files for later playback on your computer.

The shareware EAC can also be used for more stubborn audio CDs, but that's outside the scope of Proz

Search the web for lot's of references to that kind of software...

/Jan

It's actually the same problem. If your CD is copy-protected, in order to play it on your computer, you have to install the software included in the CD. The software may contain a trojan that will be installed without your permission: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_protection#Sony_CD_copy_protection_controversy

Also these copy-protected CDs won't play in all players. I have one of these cds and the cd player in my car won't play it. Nice, eh?
