I recently found an AMAZING AutoHotkey script for quickly getting English synonyms for a selected word:

I recently found an AMAZING AutoHotkey script for quickly getting English synonyms for a selected word:

• script: http://www.computoredge.com/AutoHotkey/Downloads/SynonymLookup.ahk

I have no idea how it does it so fast, but in only a second or two it

(1) takes your selected word and runs a search for it at www.thesaurus.com,
(2) scrapes the relevant synonyms/antonyms from the HTML page, and
(3) presents them in a very clear/compact little dialogue!

The biggest problem with these types of scripts (and I have written a few) is that they only work for as long as the web page's format stays the same. As soon as the company changes the web site's coding in any way, it may break the script's ability to extract the required text. You're very fortunate that Thesaurus.com still uses plain old HTML for their web pages.

“If Theraurus.com ever notices, I suppose this script may not make the owners of the site very happy. Any revenue they derive comes from the advertising. My app ignores all of it. They could change the formatting of the page, but then I would adjust the Regular Expression I use to extract the data. They might make an attempt to block my efforts, but I guess any such blocking technique would also block regular users. They could block my IP, but that would be a lot of work for just one person. (I would simply switch to another site offering synonyms.) In any case, I plan to continue using this AutoHotkey script until it stops working—for whatever reason. Then, I’ll fix it.”

Actually, besides plain-text glossaries, MS Word and other suits come packed with dictionaries and thesauruses with synonyms, antonyms, and other stuff, so it makes sense to check the Office bundle, updating some CustomDic or alike
