I agree. IMO, loyalty or patriotism has nothing to do with it. Today the consideration on whether to stay or repatriate is very different than in the 1950's. Back then, many professionals returned to China with the selfless goal of participating in the nation's reconstruction. The sacrifices they made with regard to their standard of living were enormous. What someone has to give up today is simply not comparable.

Today, people's motives and the factors driving their decision-making are considerably different. Of course, everyone's situation varies. But if I were to venture a guess, I would say the major deciding factor for most folks would boil down to which society they feel more comfortable living in. It's more a matter of preference than anything else.

Besides, why would someone choose to live in an environment rife with official malfeasance while there are other alternatives? I certainly wouldn't.

Yueyin,

Qian, a Chinese-born aeronautical engineer educated at Caltech and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was a protege of Caltech's eminent professor Theodore von Karman, who recognized him as an outstanding mathematician and "undisputed genius."

Qian's research contributed to the development of "jet-assisted takeoff" technology that the military began using in the 1940s.

He was the founding director of the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Jet Propulsion Center at Caltech and a member of the university's so-called Suicide Squad of rocket experimenters who laid the groundwork for testing done by JPL.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory Jul 4, 2011

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jet_Propulsion_Laboratory

JPL traces its beginnings to 1936 in the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology (GALCIT) when the first set of rocket experiments were carried out in the Arroyo Seco. Caltech graduate students Frank Malina, Weld Arnold, Apollo M. O. Smith, and Tsien Hsue-shen, along with Jack Parsons and Edward Forman, tested a small, alcohol fueled motor to gather data for Malina's graduate thesis. Malina's thesis advisor was aerodynamicist Theodore von Kármán, who eventually arranged for U.S. Army financial support for this "GALCIT Rocket Project" in 1939. In 1941, Malina, Parsons, Forman, Martin Summerfield, and pilot Homer Bushey demonstrated the first JATO rockets to the Army. In 1943, von Kármán, Malina, Parsons, and Forman established the Aerojet Corporation to manufacture JATO motors. The project took on the name Jet Propulsion Laboratory in November 1943 formally becoming an Army facility operated under contract by the university.

Steve,

"It was the stupidest thing this country ever did," former Navy Secretary Dan Kimball later said, according to Aviation Week. "He was no more a Communist than I was, and we forced him to go."

BTW, I visited both Caltech and JPL when I lived in California.

Employees must wash hands before returning to work.

This actress was on "The View" just now, to promote the movie "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" (雪花与秘扇). It opens in U.S. theaters starting tomorrow.

The story in the movie trailer comes across as a bit artificial. But I was quite impressed with the actress. She seemed intelligent, poised, and well-mannered.
